fender flare modification- flat fenders

I'm taking my flares off to paint them. I'm getting rid of that side-step garbage in the middle, and thinking about cutting the stock fender flares to a more flat shape; taking that curl out of them. maybe even taper them down at the ends to blend in to the body better (bc the pieces under the doors will be missing). I have a 1.5" susp. lift and 31" tires. They are offset so they sit out a little bit.
Has anyone done this to their flares? pics??

If it doesn't look ridiculous, it'd be a great way to work with what i have instead of buying new ones.
stock ones look funny after the lift and larger tires. I realize I'll lose considerable tire coverage, but it also seems to me that snow and ice wouldn't build up underneath them over the winter if they were flat instead of a groove. they would also free up some space to make it easier to spray off the salt and such underneath... and besides winter is coming up and I'm trying to be ready this time. always combating that rust

got impatient so im going for it.
front flares have been removed, trimmed, and primed.
i'll put up some pics as i go along if anyone's interested.
