Can bare metal be powdercoated with clear powdercoat? I like the way it looks when tube fenders are bare metal but I know they will rust. I don't think you could paint them with clear coat because you'd need to prime first. I don't know I'm just thinking out loud I guess.
Yeah, bare steel can be clear powder coated. I did quite a bit of clear when I did powder coating. Most of the clear that I did was on polished brass for restaurants and bars. It should be more durable than liquid paint.
When powder coating parts for harsh environments it's usually best to prep the parts for maximum adhesion. Sandblasting is commonly used to enhance adhesion. Coatings of iron phosphate, zinc phosphate or manganese phosphate also enhance adhesion. Unfortunately, these processes alter the appearance of the steel and would show through the clear.
Of course no finish can be expected to last forever when scraped against rocks and other trail obstacles. But, at least clear powder can be touched up with liquid paint without significant color match issues.
I clear powdercoated my motorcycle wheels once. Worked well, but if you looked hard enough, you could figure out which side was up when they were baked.
Eastwood has a clear coat spray paint designed for bare metal - Eastwood Diamond Clear Metal Aerosol 11 oz. I have used this product, but haven't done anything that tested its durability.
I clear powder coated my motorcycle wheels once. Wasn't perfectly clear, though - it had a slight brownish tint. Also, if you looked hard enough, you could tell which way was up when it was baked (gravity still works).
Eastwood has a clear coat spray paint for bare metal. I have used it, it looks good but I can't attest to its durability.
