Pros: Not a bad transfer case it has a decent low range. I haven't had any problems with it so far.
Cons: Has a slip yoke. Needs to have a fixed yoke and maybe just a upgrade some of the weaker parts inside.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: Not a bad t case for what I do. Has a nice low range and does not pop out of gear. Needs a fixed yoke though rubicons sye would do it and then your good for a decent t case

Pros: Parts are very reasonable and easy to obtain. Large amount of aftermarket support. 2.7.1 Low Range. Proven design.
Cons: Slip joint for rear drive shaft. I wish it had lower gears for hill decent.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: The NP231 is the standard for most Jeeps on the road today. It replaced the NP207 in the YJ years and into the TJ model. It is also standard on most XJ's and MJ's that have 4X4. There is a lot of aftermarket support to beef up and modify the stock units. TeraLow 4.1 units and Slip Yoke Eliminators are common upgrades.

They are pretty strong units and only seem to fail when abused or used improperly.

Pros: swapped mine for one with a SYE
Cons: no 4.0 range
Recommended? Yes

Comments: If I didn't have the SYE on mine, I'd possibly have upgraded by now. But for a stock Tcase, it does the job without complaint so far.

Pros: I heard it was strong.
Cons: It came with my stock 4 banger 3 speed auto SE TJ.
Recommended? Yes

Comments: It handled all I could give it from my tired 180K mile 4 banger that HAD 180 HP from the factory. It must have only had 80HP by the time I got my hands on it. I'm about to put rumor to the test. I've not got a 340 HP 5.7L Hemi going through a 45RFE 4 speed auto tranny to the NP231. I'll see how strong it really is.

Pros: Heavy duty chain and gears All new parts
Cons: No "2 low" mode
Recommended? Yes

Comments: I decided to get a SYE to correct the slight vibes in my drive shaft since doing a 2" OME lift. But since the SYE kits by themself are upwards of $300, I figured what the heck, spend another $600 and get a heavy duty NP231 to boot.

Researching the various options, it looked to me like the JB Conversions HD NP231 with their super short SYE was the way to go. It's got a wider chain, a planetary gear with 6 helical gears instead of 3, and all the parts are brand new, not refurbs.

The folks at JBC are very professional and had the unit built and delivered within a few weeks. The unit was packaged very well for the several thousand mile freight trek from Louisiana to Washington State.

So far, no leaks or anything. It bolted right in, and worked from the get go. It came from the factory with the studs attached in a ziploc bag. The studs are kind of hard to install, but I guess they didn't want them poking holes through the shipping crate or getting bent in transit.

I will give the transfer case a 5 star rating unless something happens to it! I am planning to install a Super 35 30-spline rear axle with Detroit locker, and an upgraded front differential, so my Jeep can actually handle what this transfer case can dish out.
