Product Information

MSRP: $4,000.00
Average Price: $964.73
Manufacturer: ARB
Yes: 102 / No: 1

ARB has been challenging conventional thinking on off road equipment
designs for over 30 years, and the ARB Air Locker has been a success
from the very beginning. Created to provide 100% traction on demand,
without sacrificing any of your vehicle’s highway driving performance,
ARB Air Lockers employ a 12 volt air compressor designed to activate
(and deactivate) a solid and durable locking mechanism inside the
differential. This gives you the traction you need, when you need it, all
at the flick of a switch, all within the safety and comfort of the driver’s

The advantage of the ARB Air Locker lies in the pneumatically operated
locking system inside the differential. When activated, the Air Locker
prevents the differential gears from rotating and therefore prevents the
axle shafts from turning independently of each other. With both wheels
tied directly to the rotation of the ring gear the vehicle maintains
maximum possible traction at all times. When unlocked, it operates just
like conventional "open" differentials.

In addition to providing outright improvements to a 4x4’s off road
capabilities, the Air Locker offers significant environmental benefits.
When approaching difficult terrain, less reliance is put on momentum.
An Air Locker equipped truck can be driven in a slower, safer and more
controlled manner as a result of vastly improved traction. This style of
driving greatly reduces the likelihood of incurring vehicle damage and
lessens the environmental impact as well.

Comments: I have an ARB in the rear D44 and there is no question the positive engagement is reassuring. ARB have told me the locker is able to be engaged on the move and even under wheelspin with no problems and I do often enough. I know of no maechanical failures of these units even in severe competion in New Zealand. I also had one in the front with the D30 axle and I found it of limited value in the sort of terrain we have here in NZ. The Dana traklock in the front replacement D44 seems to work much better. What I mean is with the front ARB locked there is a tendency for the front to fade to left or right if traction is scarce on a climb and the slope goes that way. This can lead to instant and dangerous sideways momentum. There are two downsides to the ARB in my opinion. One is that while they positively engage, they will disengage only when they feel like it. When you're poised on the point of no return I'd prefer to know absolutely whether they have disengaged and with ARB you don't. Secondly, a high quality of installation is critical, not only for the health of your other diff components after reassembly but also so you'll avoid air line failures in the field. I know from first hand experience when, long after the install, the copper airline inside the rear housing let go and blew the seal around the housing. No biggie if you don't need a locker to get home and don't drive through any water on the way.
