If these tires weren't so sticky I could still spin them easily. 4.88s may be a bit steep @ 65, but I think that is what WhyJ runs and he is happy with it.

Oh yeah and that is 99-03
Thanks bud!
Maybe I'll try out the 4.10s then (if I can find a matching 8.8) otherwise I'll just regear. Split the difference maybe to 4.56?

Gotcha; 99-03. I'm heading to the JY tomorrow to try and find an hp30 for a TJ friend. I'll see what chevy's they have there then. The guy with the cheap 5.3 won't answer now. I hope he didn't sell it already....:

Oh and why doesn't your tach work? That would drive me fking nuts! All your other gauges work right?

Cheers

p.s. have you figured your fuel mileage yet? Wondering what you're getting....

Derp. Didn't think about this....
Just got onto http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

4.10s-1791@65
4.56- 1992@65
4.88-2132@65

IIRC my '97 Chevy with the 5.7 and 4l60e was about 1800 at 65-70mph. So sounds about right with the 4.10s. That may make my life a bit easier and save a few bucks. Although my chevy only had 33s so idk...

Cheers

AAAAAAnnnd just to blow up your build thread...

Looks like my local JYs (checking car-part.com) has quite a few 5.3s from about $550-$800 with around 90k-130k miles and 4l60e transmissions for about the same. So anywhere from 1000-1600 for a motor trans...How much did you spend on those two items?

Cheers

Dude I can't answer this many questions at once

Well if you read my build thread, I bought the whole truck from the insurance company for $1600

I think 4.56 would do well with 35s. IIRC when I owned the truck it did right at 2000rpm @ 65.

According to Torque my PCM says I'm getting around 23 mpg on a flat stretch on the highway (on 33s)

Got the Jeep out of the garage today. I just used my old rubber return line until my 5/16 fittings come in. Still waiting on my new pump gasket from Genright as well.

Only problem is my pump is loud as hell now. Sparrows and I were talking and I think maybe clogged fuel filter so it is working as hard as it can. I'm gonna put the pressure guage on it here shortly and see if I'm getting enough fuel. Any other ideas? At first I thought it would quiet down when I filled the tank but no change.

Apparently I never got charged for the pump gasket so instead of ordering from Genright and waiting longer I found one on amazon Prime for $10. The rest of my fittings came in on Saturday so I need to finish it up.

I asked Genright about my loud pump and they said they have never heard of any issues. I put the pressure gauge on it and I have a full 55+ psi throughout a good couple of revs so I'm not sure what's going on. Maybe it is because it is just hanging there since the new tank is taller? When I finish everything else up I will lengthen the pump so it touches the bottom of the tank.

Here is a video so you guys can feel my pain. Not very fun to drive with that blaring into your ear holes.

I just swapped pumps and that's about what mine sounded like with the floor access plate out. I'd pull it and just make sure all the clamps are tight and it isn't leaking in the tank. Any plans to add a bracket to mount the tank a little more securely?

I'll definitely make sure the clamps are tight when I extend the pump. It would probably be a good idea to use FI clamps but the worm drive clamps were fine before. That's the odd part, I never put the access panel back on with the tank underneath and never heard a sound from it except for when it primed with the ignition on.

I kinda thought about adding some straps to the cell. Maybe some 1" nylon straps with metal eyelets and bolt it to the floor.

Yeah 99-03 on the dwc throttle bodies. Dbw is perfectly fine if you have all the parts from the donor vehicle to do it. I used the stock silverado pedal when I did the 08 into the 04 tj. Not too difficult in all.

If the motor is a dbw gen 3 LS then it most likely will have an ecu, Tcm and a TAC module. You need to get the TAC module and the electric pedal also. Gen 4s have just the ecu and Tcm in most cases. Depending on the trans, some gen 4s do not have an external Tcm.

Randon sucks you have pump noise. How much fuel is in the tank? Might want to loosen the mounting bolts slightly or double up the gaskets to get as much "separation/insulation" as possible between the pump assembly and tank. Unlike the TJs the YJ pumps don't have that internal fuel basket which also acts as a noise baffle among it's other duties.

I just re read a previous post. If you have the pulp assembly bolted to the aluminum tank (without the gasket-which I read that was on order) that thing will be loud as hell. Get the gasket installed and go from there

Ok have a Little more info... I just paid 1650 for a full lift out 87k motor, trans, ecu, harness, maf etc... Motor and trans mated. Get a 4wd trans. Do not get a 2wd thinking you can easily make it a 4wd. Don't work that way. It's not a 545rfe! Be absolutely sure you buy your 5.3 from a reputable YJ or you see the motor in the vehicle it is coming from. Stock 4.8l, 5.3 and 6.0s are identical once outside the Vehicle and the only ways to verify is pulling front dress to find block stamping or scope the pistons. Ask me how I learned this lesson.

Randon. .. Yeah I got the power steering issues resolved with a trip to the JY and snagging a stock fitting or two. GM made 2 different fittings based in trim/luxury packages. Less than a $1 and I was back in business.

Glad to see progress buddy. Little annoyances like loud pumps are what happen when you build! It's in resolving the issues that we gain knowledge and accomplishment. LOL

Great info Jim. I remember your 5.3/4.8 fiasco. That is a good lesson for anyone looking for those engines.

I do have my old gasket under the pump. It isn't just metal on metal. The only thing I don't have on it is the top ring. Also it has a full tank, even though my gauge only says 1/2. I need to see what to do to get it functioning properly.

I got everything finalized this afternoon. It seems like Genright mounted the threaded inserts for the fuel pump backwards. When I first set it up the pressure and return lines were on the driver side, but because of the staggered bolts they come out on the passenger side now. 1385774970692.jpg luckily the wires had enough slack. If I flipped the cell around to keep the pump in the original orientation that would put the fill hole on the other side and farther in which doesn't make sense to me. So I drilled a new hole in the center of the tub, but now the lines are in a better position

Before 1385775171805.jpg

I didn't take a pic of how they are now but they are much straighter.

The fuel pump whine is still there but not as bad. Hopefully the old lady can live with it

Suggestion... Take a minute, when u have a minute...(lol) and see about adding a basket similar to what the TJs have to A baffle the fuel pump sound more and B create a reservoir/baffle for fuel for the pump when you're off camber... Just a thought. Unless there's an internal baffle in there already and I'm out in left field....;-)
