I've never been poor, only broke. Poor is a state of mind. Broke is a condition brought on by Jeep ownership and a heavy right foot.

I'm trying to gather parts for my transfer case for when I install my new skid plate. First on the list is the oil filter/screen that I broke. I also have

Alloy USA chain

Range fork pad set

Anything else I should worry about?

Thanks Jim. What do you think about the Alloy USA chain vs a 231c chain? The alloy USA chain didnt say anything about added strength.

Thats what I was thinking of. If I could pick it up for $120 id jump on it. What year S10s come with the 6 pinion? Ive looked it up but ive also heard that some do and some dont

im sure clint can add more, but from what ive found, finding the 6 gear set in the s10's t/cases is a 'hit and miss' type situation... most only had 4 gear set, which is still better than the 3 gear in the 231j. im chasing [2] 241c's right now. the 231s and 241s are in the same case family from new process. im sure the guys at jb conversions could give you more insight. im going through them for my SYE kits this time around.

if i had the choice, id run the 1.25" chain if i had it available to me [easily obtainable and cost effective]. the 1" chains are pretty durable, but with the v8 and other torque multipliers, i'd take the extra 1/4" like any other guy if it was available i/we have snapped axles, u joints, grenaded carriers etc, but not snapped any stock 231's chain yet... however, no v8 infront of it either LOL

alloy usa used to be reider racing, until they were bought out. i haven't bought anything from there since the new ownership took over years ago. ive heard good and bad on their stuff, however no firsthand experience.

i have seen afew 231c's on ebay every so often, i was going to get one a few weeks ago, it was 179.00 shipped in US. the guts are worth it.

I'm not sure if there is a good way to tell if you are going to get a 4 or 6 planetary set. None of my searching could tell me. I just got lucky. IIRC, my case is from a 92.

My buddy has a 94 Blazer that he is parting out but it has a 233c. I saw some parts that were listed for 231c/j and 233, I wonder if I could use anything from that? I'll try to do some searching. We need to put together a t-case parts bible

Found some good info and parts lists. It kinda muddied the water a bit more, but it seems that pre-94 231s have a larger bearing planetary than 94+. But they lump Dodge, Chevy and Jeep 231s together, and don't even list a 3 or 4 pinion...

http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_cata...rts/np231.html

Edit: JB Conversions also lists a 95+ 6 pinion planetary...

NP shows that the NP233 is the same case, but electrically shifted. if its your buddy.. get the 'good buddy discount' and get the t case. tear it open and go hmmm... i bet the internals will swap into the 231j case.

231 and 241 IIRC cases are the same 'family' in regards to internals. chevy changed the bolt pattern to keep them from interchange. you can swap bearings and bearing retainers on them as long as its the correct pitch. IIRC they changed the pitch in that 94/95 changeover, like you mentioned. you can put a input gear from a 241d in a 231j etc or a 27 spline input gear from a 231c/241c into a 231j, you have to have to know what you have and where you want to go.

guys take the 231c case front half and put the 231J SYE internals in them with the 231c input gear, 4 or 6 gear planetarys, 1.25 chain and gears with the 231j rear half.... just like clint did LOL

i just got done emailing a guy that has [2] np241c manual shift tcases. 98's with 6 bolt mounting pattern that where behind 4l60e's. going to pick them up for $400 for the pair, probably on sunday. ill put one on the bench next to the 231j and tear them both down. hehehehe!! for my build, im hoping to just be able to put a 241 SYE kit on it, bolt it up to my trans and run it. but i will probably run into an input gear issue or some kind of headache LOL

theres a few write up on pirate in regards to the 231j/231c. ill see if i can find a good one and post a link.
