Have you looked into the Magnum motor swaps? 5.9L are great motors.

not really. The guy that has all of the experience and is helping me mainly knows gm stuff. They have done 3 of these swaps that I know of. I am kind of partial to the gm myself. I would just swap the tranny but it costs more for the adapter plates than it would for a whole parts vehicle.

If you go through the trouble of an engine swap then a 5.3 is the way to go.
4.3 does not really have enough oomph with 5.38 gears to run 39's or 40's
A bud of mine has a very nicely built CJ7 with a 4.3 in it and when he runs his 39's it runs out of steam on the street

Between the 4.3 and 5.3, hold out for a 5.3. They are great engines and make tons of power. You can build them mild to wild!

The ls1 is lighter since it's an all aluminum engine.
Stock 5.3 or 4.8 is still a bit lighter than the 4.0 which is a heavy sucker

A 5.7L is a good motor. Just swap a 6.0L in it and go have some fun.

6.6L

Duramax

Edit: With the way my truck runs I've always thought it would be cool to build a buggy around a Duramax/Allison. Would be a heavy sucker but I bet you it would be fun! Haha
