little bit of progress made, brakes are removed, brackets cut off, started cleaning up the housing:

Question for you guys...the left axle shaft is able to move in/out about an 1/4 of an inch...where as the right shaft i can just barely wiggle. What could be the cause? Bad bearings? That seems like a lot of play to me...

Making progress, ground off the old brackets:

Im using different coil buckets than what came in the kit from ballistic. also, i will be going with a custom track bar bracket.

you can see i had to cut the coil bucket to fit with the LCA bracket

brackets are mocked up, im going to loosely bolt it in without the springs to verify everything is where it should be, then it will be time for final welding

Great build man! When you added the brackets to the 8.8, did you just pull the 35 to compare and pull dimensions off of while you work? My brother-in-law wants to install an 8.8 but was curious if we could do it with out the artec truss.

Thanks! I bought my brackets from Ballistic...they dont come with any directions. You got it, i am just measuring off of the stock dana 35. It will look a bit different, as the diff is not centered on the 8.8...it sits over to one side a few inches more. No real need for the artec truss IMO, just weld the tubes to the center, to prevent them from spinning.

Pretty much all the welding is done on the 8.8:

Here you can see the coil buckets, these are different than what Ballistic includes in their kit:

Welds came out ok:

went ahead and welded the tubes to the center...used my handy torch to heat up the casting:

cleaned them real well:

then started doing 2 inch sections, on one side then the other, so i wouldnt warp the housing:

I would weld a bit, heat a bit, and repeat:

Then when i was done, i wrapped it up with some old shirts...just so it would slow the cooling process down, and help prevent cracking of the welds:

picked up a 3.73 geared dana 30 from the junk yard this weekend to match my 8.8. It came out of a v8 grand cherokee ZJ. I have already removed the stupid CV axle shafts and hubs/brakes/etc....i will be swapping all the parts over from my current dana 30 to this one.

Also, traded in my diesel for a 2014 QuadCab 4x4 5.7 Hemi, laramie package, 8 speed auto, all the good stuff

Im really liking it, rides so smooth, and still has plenty of power to tow up to 10,000 lbs...probably in the next month or so i will be picking up a trailer for the TJ, so it will get put to work ha.

Total cost of axle swap so far:

ford 8.8: $70
ballistic brackets: $150
rear driveshaft bolt on yoke for 8.8: $5
ford racing bearings and seals (on order): $28
Dana 30: $80

Need to order (estimated cost):

LS clutch rebuild kit: $100
2 diff covers: $200
front auto locker: $300
8.8 rotors/pads: $130

Should be just over a $1,000 when im done.

What's the difference between a TJ low pinion Dana 30 and a ZJ low pinion Dana 30 other than the cv shafts in them? My buddy is looking for a front TJ 30 with 3.73's but if the ZJ is the same he could just install one of those and swap his shafts from his 3.07 front 30 in it.

One more thing. My TJ heat sucks to! I've already flushed the heater core but it's still not hot. Since the thermostat was shot in yours did the heat ever get hot or did it just take a long to me to get hot? Mine won't get hot at all!
