I didn't like the way the Jeep handled. The "spool jacking" thing was not good. But, here's the $64 question....

Was the problem the spool? Or was it the short arm lift?

Well, to answer that question all I had to do was look at our guide's TJ. It had a basic long arm lift from Teraflex. It only had long lowers. But he was running a spool. His Jeep exhibited NONE of the goofy characteristics of my Jeep. Sure, I would likely be okay with a full Detroit, but the problem will still come up (pun) from time to time with a locker. The long term answer is a long arm lift.

However, money is still tight and a long arm lift would likely cost me $1600+ after I would sell my current lift. Too much moolah for me. It was then that Lance's (geauxturbo) write-up enticed me. He'd copied the Clayton long arm lift and I'm doing the same! So far I've ordered and received the bushings, Johnny Joints, and hardware. I'm just waiting on the steel to be ready to be picked up and the Rubicon Express bushing sleeves to be delivered. This should all be within this week.

Next week, the fabrication begins!!!

Sounds like a fun project. You could also get some shorter springs to help you out. It looks like you have to much room in the wheel wells for the tires you are running and that would help with you Jeep leaning so much since it is top heavy right now.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind dropping it another inch, but long term I plan on running 36s or 37s in which case the lift I've got should be just right. But like you said, I may still drop it a bit in the meantime and lift it again when the time comes.

BTW, I read your entire thread on your build and it was great stuff! Fantastic job!

Thanks. You are right, I was running 4.5 springs with my 37's so if you plan to step up then you will be fine. I am running 39.5's now on my same 4.5 springs.

And they bolted right up, too? Awesome!!!

My buddy is running a D30 up front with a Lock Right and alloy axles. Based on how his rig does with that setup I'll make the decision to stick with the "small" tires or sell them and step up to some 37s. Time will tell and I'm in no rush.

Right.

It depends on how you drive. I ran my 37's with a stock dana 30 with an aussie locker and chromo'd Dana 44 with a full detroit and I never broke anything. I was easy on the pedal and tried not get my front tire bound up while turning.

You sound exactly like me! I've always been pretty gentle on equipment so I suspect I'll be fine with the D30 with 37s....especially if I put stout axles and u-joints in there.

Here's a little write-up on why I decided to remove the spool and install a full Detroit in its place.

Wednesday night I removed the spool and installed the Detroit. The Detroit certainly has it's "nuances", but so far I prefer it to the spool.

Thursday morning I replaced the fuel pump. The old one was making bad racquet. Fires first time every time now!!

Went wheelin' today in Bastrop with the local Jeep club. Really tight, very technical trails...

Pics are right here.

Here's a few.....

I made mine a lot louder. Cut the muffler off and welded in a turndown to make clearance for the triangulated 4 link I'll build....hopefully soon!

Re-used the OEM flange and tailpipe:

It's too loud and "trashy" sounding to keep fulltime, but for the interim it'll work until I can determine how much muffler clearance I'll have with the new suspension.

Is that a public Jeep trail in Bastrop? I've been looking for a place to wheel but it seems there arnt any around me. Bastrop would be the closest so far.

Sold the 98 TJ Sahara. Buying another Jeep soon!

I've enjoyed reading the thread so far. You are right, tires and flares in the beginning made a drastic difference and it just keeps getting better. Sweet ride.

Partial hijack, but if you wouldn't mind, could you give me some more details on the top hoist you made? Anymore pictures? Specifically, how is your frame built to hold the top.

I really need to get a hoist rather than depend on friends to help me with my top... I'm just sure I can do it cheaper than the $190 or so it would cost to buy one outright.
