No, matter of fact the 4.10's that were stock are better than the 3.xx gears that were in the cherokee. Worked out well since I found an 8.8 axle that had 4.10's as well.

quick question here i am putting in my 4.0L and found my tranny has no starter on it and i can't find where it went anyway. I was told the 2.5L starter will work is this true i thought it might be different but wasn't sure.

thanks,
chris

When I swapped mine, the starters looked totally different. My YJ was a 95 and the XJ was a 92 in my case. Dunno about other years, but certain that at least those years don't match.

Just a few updates....

Finally got the nerve to hack-n-tap the transfer case.

And put on some new stainless brake lines.

Next up, driveshaft cut on monday, rear brakelines next weekend.

Nah, was easier than I thought. Took a 4 1/2" grinder with a cutoff wheel to the shaft. Then drilled and tapped it iwth the included tap and bit. Pretty easy actually. Just used lots of cutting fluid and kept backing out the tap while doing it.

Well.....need I say more than............

It's done.

After 3 months, I'm done. Here is what I accomplished for those just joining in on this thread.

1. Removed 4banger drivetrain. Inserted Cherokee drivetrain, including I6, AW4 tranny and the NP242 transfer case.

2. Removed Dana 35 rear axle. Inserted an 8.8 axle with disc's.

3. Went from a 4" spring under suspension to SOA with 2" skyjacker springs.

4. Installed taurus electric fan with thermostatic control.

5. Removed stock 90A alternator, installed ZJ 130A alternator.

It seems like it's been forever. But well worth it. Still have some small things to tie up, but hopefully I can take it for a good trail run next week. Anyone who may have questions about any of the above is always welcome to inquire. I'm no expert, but I can give you my experiences with these installs. Thanks for all that gave advice along the way.

Do you have a build cost tally?
Especially Soa?

What did you do for steering?

Got the crossover steering with a custom draglink and traction bar on today. Slowly the "little things" are getting finished up.

As far as how you "massaged" your skid plate, do you think that will create any problems for you in the future? I am in process of putting a 96 4.0 with AX15 from an XY into my 87 YJ and am running into the same issue of the TC being clocked at 23* instead of 13*. When the skid bolts up, the TC is sitting against it.

Has anyone seen another option than cutting the skid to make this work? Or is it not a big deal? Any writeups (I haven't found any..)
