tjcoffee98's tj build thread

Ive been on this forum a hundred times looking up all sorts of stuff and i finally decided to join so i figured id start up a build thread. I always wanted a wrangler and simply loved jeeps and to my surprise i was able to get one as my first ride. Its a 1998 5 speed 4.0 with 3.73 gears. It needed a little bit of tlc and a new clutch but it was a beauty to me. I apologize in advance that a lot of the pics i have are just posers. I tend not to take a ton of pics out wheeling and while working on it, its usually not a concern but none the less i have enough to show the evolution of the jeep.

This is when it was in basic form, all cleaned up, new clutch, and some 235/75 duratracs

I was pretty happy with it for a while, i wanted to put some miles on it and try to replace everything that needed replacing, or anything i felt was going to soon. It turned out to be a really clean jeep, most people never guessed it was a 98. Over that time i decided to add a couple of spacers to the front coils to make up for their sag, did xelerator performance exhaust, got a safari top, and redid the stereo cause im a music fanatic and it is a daily driver so it makes it a much nicer ride, plus rocking out in the woods is always a good time.

here are a couple of pics i have wheeling like it was then, like i said i dont take a bunch of pics so they're not the best

on this trip in particular we both ended up getting stuck the worst we ever have been, and of course it was at the same time. we waited quite a few hours to get a friend out there to get us out. i wish i could find a pic of it but at least for now i cant.

So finally about a year ago i decided it was time for the fun stuff, i had always wanted to lift it and deck it out but for quite some time i was happy with it how it was. It really never had a problem going anywhere offroad but i wanted to make it better.

so i started off with rustys 2'' coils for the front and 2 inch spacers in the rear (the front netted about 2.5) and some rancho rs5000 shocks. i went with 31x10.5 duratracs on black 15x8 cragars, and ditched those milk jugs for some armadillo industries bumper ends to give the bumpers an upgraded look.

this gave the jeep a whole new attitude and made it quite a bit bigger than stock and still kept it a great dd

over the next couple of months i added a couple kc spots with windshield brackets, finally got a full size spare, and started to work on a bit of a theme i thought would look cool. i wanted to try to make some of the accents on the jeep red, and stick with that look as i went along. i already had red shock boots on it from the ranchos so i had red sport decals made to replace the purple-blue ones and added red and black kc covers to the lights. the idea was to make it noticeable yet not overdo it either

A few months later i decided on what bumpers i wanted and on some more lights. i got a smittybilt src for the front and a smittybilt src classic rock bumper for the rear and a couple kc driving lights for up front. this really made the jeep much tougher, made recoveries much easier and made it have much more attitude.

i decided i wanted to mount the lights inverted on the upper tabs on the bumper for a unique look. I actually used brake caliper sleeves to space the lights out so they'd fit, after some cutting and reaming and painting they worked perfect

Pretty soon after the bumpers i got a set of rough country quick discos, a cb radio setup, and got some new exhaust. My not very old xlerator muffler decided to start breaking up inside so i had an excuse to go louder and decided to drop the muffler and run a straight pipe, and boy does it sound sweet

heres some flex pics along with some wheeling shots from around then

most recently i have gotten a smittybilt xrc8 winch and some diamond plate front fender guards (to cover up a dent from the previous owner thats been bothering me forever). I dont have any pics of those yet but i also recently added some extra touches, I painted the d rings red and took the stone guards from the kcs and repainted the white kc emblems red.

these are some of the most recent pics of the jeep and i hope to be getting some pics with the winch and the diamond plate covers that "fixed" my fender soon

As of recently ive done quite a bit if work to the jeep. added some more lift and some 4" xenon flat fenders as well as in the process of getting bigger tires once i decide on what size. went up to 4". between the lift and gaining almost an extra 2" of tire clearance from the flats its really got some room.

this is how it sits with the flats and the old lift (2"), needless to say theres way to much room for those 31s under there with that lift let alone the new one and im getting some bigger tires asap

Finally posting up some pics of the new lift and tires. Went with 33x12.5 duratracs. Great tires and give tons of room to flex. In the mean time i also Got a Rough country dana 30 diff guard, a mopar upgraded fuel tank skid, and a high performance ignition system (MSD coil, taylor wires, bosch iridium plugs, and performance distributors cap and rotor). on top of that I recently put some red pinstripes on the lip of my cragars along with some black center caps for a more unique look.

Been a while since i posted here. The Jeep has been through some changes since. Its gotten smittybilt xrc rock sliders, a hood mounted hi-lift jack, New rough country lower control arms custom painted red, and a new set of 35 inch duratracs mounted on 17x9 ballistic jester wheels with red inserts. there's also a 1.25 inch jks body lift sitting in the box just waiting to go on someday soon when its warm enough, bringing the total lift to 5.25 inches after that.
