The box the seal came in is numbered "1209", guess its the wrong one?

Going to get jeep back from mech tonight, he just pulled all the bolts off and put a few in to let it hang till I get it home instead of putting in new nutserts.. Also need to pickup new seals. I broke the little magnet, but I'll use my old one. The next big problem? According to the mechanic, my front tires are unsafe to drive. He convinced the parents to not let me drive until I have new ones. Unfortunately, the set I have now were supposed to be temporary until summer when I could get a brand new set of 5. I ****ing hate my mechanic.

Front tires don't look bad in earlier pic. Is he saying that they are bald or badly wheather checked. Or is he a tire dealer as well as a mech.

Not a tire dealer, but was offering to locate me some of course. He said they were below the legal trad depth. Warned me at last inspection so now I guess he's mad.

Too bad about the tires... why don't you look for some used ones for the short haul. You could probably get a pair installed & balanced for around $100.

Though I understand that you should eventually get all 4 tires to match. I've read that if they don't this can affect the t/c.

As for the seal... # 1209, is that the rear seal on the transmission?

What transmission do you have? AX-15 manual?

Yea I'll probably just find a used set. I think if the tread pattern and wear is similar all around, it wont be so bad. And #1209 is supposed to be for the rear output shaft seal. I have an AX-15.

I see. Out here in Oregon we don't have to deal with regular inspections. You should see some of the tires I see on the road on a regular basis. I've seen them with wires showing, but people will still run them till they blow.. For all you fellow Oregonians, you must remember that I am in Grants Pass.

There's a couple versions, which should help. But they are slow.

According to the 98 tj parts catalog, the seal part numbers are:

transmission rear seal ax15 & ax5: 83503108
231 front input seal: 4167 929
231 rear output seal: 4798 117
231 front output seal: 4798 112

Don't take my word for it though, double check!!!!!!! The 1209 might be a manufacturer's number. Who knows?

Funny though, I could find the seals on autopartswarehouse by the numbers Jr. provided, but only the trans seal by the part number in the catalog. Huh?

You can also call the parts department at your local chrysler for the parts number.

What a PITA! You'd thing by these days, we'd have this kinda stuff standardized! I might just order from quadratec. Slightly more expensive. But I know what i'm getting then.

Finally pulled skid off. Took about an hour with the sawzall for the last bolt. Rebuilding the front driveshaft tonight. Ordered seals from quadratec, should ship soon.

Since the t/c is apart, and you're still waiting for seals... I'd clean all the parts inside, if you haven't already. Most everything pulls out and can be put back together again. Most people use a non-residue brake cleaner. If you have an air compressor, that'll come in handy to remove any particles.

As well, if you're getting bored waiting for the seals you show up... you could paint the t/c case
