Test Bed Two- The Desert Raider

I just sold the 92' YJ to get me started on another project, and provided the funds to allow me to pick up some new high tech machinery for the shop.
image-2444782490.jpg

I learned a lot from that project for sure. But now its time to do it again!

I picked up this 95' YJ with a rotted out rear frame section. The floors are almost non existent, and it does have some rust holes under the plate covers.

Somehow, everything is in great working order, mostly original interior and it looks really great considering.
4.10 Gearing with a 5 Speed Manual Transmission and a 4.0L with 140k on the clock. 6 inches of lift on well worn 35s. Has zero issues driving at 65-75 on the highway. Looks like this one will be a desert tan soon..
image-2165343150.jpg

First order of business was the cigarette lighter. I replaced the silly acrylic dice with a decent looking Ejection Seat Button.
image-4012525103.jpg

Also added a phone/ GPS holder in place of the useless 4WD Display and took out the flame gauge inserts.

Had all fluids changed out and shes out on the road!

Touched up the tow hooks in a similar color today.
Hung them to dry and will put them on tomorrow.
Lovin' the color!

I got to putting up the tow hooks but forgot to take pictures!

Also taped up the non-functioning 4WD selector light with Black duct tape.

While I was at it the rear bumper got the stickers removed and the chrome redone in semi-gloss black.
Things are moving!

Got to sanding down the passenger side fender and retouching up in black.
Turns out both fenders are 90% bondo to deal with the bad metalwork. Everywhere!
:single tear:

Man did that oil look and smell bad.

Did a Staple oil Change with 10w-30 Synthetic and a K&N HP2004 for a slight more oil capacity.
(Not that a Cup matters..)

While fidgeting around I noticed the circuit breaker for the winch was well.. Broken.
Just bypassed it and threw the thing out.
image-2232169644.jpg

Also changed the brake fluid and added clutch fluid while I had a slow week. Found this useful syringe thingamajig which did help emptying the reservoir of the old fluid.
Pretty good for $3 I'd say.

I was gifted with a non-engaging clutch when I needed to do a parts run.
What a way to start the year right?
Bad omen? Old Jeep that needs love? Chance? Who knows!
(Obviously its just an old Jeep, not some superstitious nonsense)

I made a rather painfully slow drive the 5 miles to the Nearest Pep Boys where I picked up an OEM LUK Clutch kit for little under $90 after a good online coupon.
image-2819685352.jpg
image-1952595380.jpg

When I returned to the shop I noticed that the clutch fluid reservoir was empty..
image-808645551.jpg

Filled it up with Mopar DOT 3 fluid and aired it out and what do you know.. The clutch engages now. (Although the 1-2 shift is terrible when cold)
Doh!

Nice platform you got yourself there!!!

With the cold 1-2 shift, it's pretty common I've heard with these AX trannys. After some reading I switched the oil in it to synthetic 10-30 for much smoother shifting. I did try the synchromesh stuff too and to me wasn't worth the extra money. Cheapy Autozone 10-30 full synth was the ticket.

Interested to see this builds progression!

Why thank you very much! :bows:
1-2 is awful when cold and its only been in the 30s these nights. Won't be long before we're seeing it drop into the 20s and eventually near Zero.
I'll be looking into some quality synthetic by the week's end.
Thanks for the advice!

Don't worry I'll be sure to do frequent updates too.

Had an early morning and got some minor things done. Tow hooks got mounted up finally.
The HF Winch got touched up in a Dark Gray I had kicking around the shop, which turned out okay looking.
The front bumper also got entirely redone in a semi-gloss Black to match the original color

Now I finally got half decent pictures of it in the parking lot at work today. Enjoy!
