On your shock question. It depends on the type of shock.

Mono Tube or emulsion, typically can down. The oil and nitrogen are not separated. If upside down the valve is typically not in the oil and does not work correctly.
Twin Tube, Remote Res, either way. The oil and nitrogen are separated by a bladder, so the valve is always in the oil.

I hate those upper shock mounts.

Not at all pretty so far...I gave up for the night and started drinking instead. I look at it again tomorrow with fresh (albeit hungover) eyes...

Grinder and a cut off wheel...there should be a single (sometimes there is two) spot weld holding the nut.

Grind as much of the weld off, and then grab a chisel and hammer to finish the work.

I broke all 4 when I did my shocks.

How did you get a grinder up there? I had the body disconnected and lifted as far as I could get it, and barely had room for my Dremel... I was pounding the **** out of the thing with a sharp chisel, Air Hammer, 4 lb sledge taking FULL swings and it's not budging, even a little bit

I undid all the body mounts all the way to in front of the doors...I then jacked it up (granted it may not have been the safest thing I have ever done) with some 2x4s stacked on top of each other and screwed together.

I'm still alive with all limbs intact...so I guess it wasn't that bad

Wade,

I had the same problem on my jeep. What I did is get a cutoff wheel that fits in a drill. Like this one...Shop GatorGrit 1-1/2" Mounted Grinding Wheel at Lowes.com this with let you get up in the hole. I assembled it in the hole which let me cut out my old broken bolts. Good luck!

Maybe I'll hit up my local HW store tomorrow and see what I can find. I did undo all the body mounts in back (Not all the way up front), but couldn't get anywhere near enough lift to get a grinder in there.

At least I have something to be thankful for... the Passenger side went right in...a little anti-seize on the bolts before re-install and they went up and it just installed right up there...

Not a ton of space between the fat 2.75" Shock body on the Rancho and the lower spring perch on my axle (considering I had the can up/rod down on my old shocks) but I guess we'll see how it goes once I get everything bolted back up...

***EDIT*** I double checked the part number and all the Installed Pics I see on Google (albeit not on TJ's) show Can side down, so I assume that's the way Rancho Intended
Yep, the new Ranchos are supposed to be mounted can-down. There were a couple of threads a few months ago where it came up, but it's been awhile. Anyway, mine go on tomorrow!
