Sonic's 05 TJ build

Just thought I'd start a thread since I know how inspiring they can be.

I got my first Jeep about 5 or 6 years ago. It was a 2002 X. I replaced the bumpers, put rocker guards on it, SYE, 4" list, 33" tires, ford 9" in the rear, ARB front and rear. I ended up selling it a couple years ago because I thought it would help some of our financial issues... It didn't and it definitely wasn't a reason we had the issues.

I bought a CJ about a year ago to place it. The PO told me I would just have to replace the fuel lines and it should be fine. Well, one thing led to another, frame off, yadda yadda... I had been looking for a TJ for a little while because of my frustration. Finally two weeks ago, I dug into the tranny and TC and realized I had to rebuild them too... That was the last straw.

I got the OK from the wife to buy a TJ, and this is what I ended up with.

My new toy

The day we got it, we took it for a weekend trip to Monterey. When I got it home my boys asked, can we take that daddy. How could I say no?!?!?!

Came with some upgrades:

HD Steering, at least they look thicker than the ones I had, and they are a lot thicker than the CJ's!!!

Bumpers front and rear, not my style, but way better than stock!!!

Rocker guards:

My least favorite part, sounds good around town but gets annoying on the freeway, may have to swap it for a 40 series down the line.

First mod:

Second mod, it had a nice head u it in it, but the speakers sounded so thin. I stole the cheap amp and speaker box out of my truck... I unhooked it a couple years ago anyway, it was just sitting in there taking up space. I had to lop off about a foot of the box to get it to fit. Made the porter box a sealed box, and still sounds pretty good!

So for now, the boys nicknamed it bumble bee... Not sure if it will stick, but it's hard to change when that's what the boys keep calling it... :D

Thanks to all that stopped in to check it out!!!

Looks good:highfive:

What is up with the lights behind the nerf/brush bar??? Mount em up or remove them, they look stupid and I can only guess put a good shadow pattern out when used.

SonicR1 02-16-2011 05:04 AM

Thanks Gixxer!

Kd006, I turned them on for the first time and couldn't really tell they were on!!! I am thinking about taking all 4 off, but think the bumper would look sillier without them. I probably wouldn't have picked that bumper, but it is on there, and, well, it will do. So am still debating what to do and will stay as is, until I decide. :)

The transformation begins…

http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/...J/3aa9b940.jpg

Next will be 4" lift, SYE, and gearing… although I am amazed how well it drives with the 6 speed. In my 02 with the 5 speed, I wasn't able to drive in 5th gear and I had to slip the clutch on take off. The 6 speed does really well on both…. obviously I need to re-gear and will down the line, but I am happily surprised with how well it works for now.

I think my next project is a wheel carrier for the bumper… trying to figure out how to fab one on to my bumper…

So you're over here too. :D Hey when are you gonna get busy buidling that swing arm Bill??? I want to see some fab work going on.

SonicR1 03-15-2011 10:25 PM

Yeap, Jim, I placed a thread here hoping to get feedback from the TJ guys and inspire others.

I looked at Besrks bumper thread and found mention of the double shear idea, but he didn't go into detail. I might use the spindle, like he did, put it between the rear bars and the tub, and box around it for strength, but I'm still surfing looking for ideas!!!

SonicR1 03-20-2011 12:21 AM

Well, put the Zone Offroad body lift on today. Great instructions, went on easy!!!

Almost done with this one... Gearing is next...

Great build so far. Where are you located in CenCal? i am from the monterey area and glad to see some people from 'round here on the JF.

SonicR1 03-20-2011 10:56 AM

Thanks Prune! I'm out in Manteca… There are a bunch of CJ'ers out here too. When I had my first TJ, there was a group of us that would go out all the time. After selling my Jeep and getting the new one, most of the guys don't go out anymore. I'm half afraid to wheel this thing with the D35 in back, but I'm really jones'en to go!!! So I'm on the lookout for a group to go with. Let me know if you know of one!

Prunetuck4X4 03-20-2011 12:46 PM

That's cool Is there good wheeling areas in Manteca? Hey man many people wheel with Dana 35 and never have a problem just have to be one of those lucky guys haha. I don't know of any groups out here that wheel but If I find any I will let you know.

We go up to the Sierra's, only a couple hours from here. Trails and rocks, fun and technical. We went to Hollister Hills once. I liked it for the camping aspect, but not terribly technical... mostly trail stuff, which was really cool since it was raining and very muddy!!!

I had an ARB in the D30, and an ARB in my Ford 9" for the rear, so I was never worried about breaking anything. With this D35, I am waiting for it to explode as I drive down the street, with the reputation it has… :) I need to regear, there is a D35 close to me with 4.56 gears and track lock… I can't regear mine for the price of the other one, but I am still apprehensive about spending any money on another D35, but the price is right…

Prunetuck4X4 03-20-2011 05:35 PM

Yeah pretty much the only legal and good offroading down here is Hollister Hills, like you said though its not crazy technical but good for people like me who are just starting all this offraoding stuff. i have never been to the Serrias but i may look into it. other than Hollister Hills we have fun on farm roads and whatever we can find that is not illegal.

I am in the same boat with trying to find an upgrade for my Dana 35. i may S35 and truss it. or just go with a Dana 44. my options are open and am pricing it all out right now to see what my best and cheapest option is.

SonicR1 03-20-2011 11:04 PM

If you can weld, look into a dana 60, I've seen a few on CL in the $100 range. I have been thinking about this for a while, only problem is the bolt pattern… if you found a 60 and a 44 from a 3/4 truck together it could be worth it… relatively bullet proof (for my purposes anyway) for about $500… I am torn about this too!!! I've heard you can find 8.8's in the wrecking yards for like $300, then all you need to do is weld on the perches… I don't know.

Prunetuck4X4 03-20-2011 11:55 PM

Yes I have seen 8.8s go from 150 to 300 and all you need to do is weld on the brackets.
