The "Should have started with a CJ" build

Current state:http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/...7/P7310075.jpg

The plans for my Jeep have changed A LOT since I made my original build thread and I think now is about the right time to make a new one.

It spent 10 years in Florida (where its originaly from) then the next 11 here in MA, on Cape Cod mostly sitting in a garage. I brought it home for the awsome price of 600 bucks.

Got it home put a new clutch in it. Then got some 32's and rode those on the sagging stock springs untill I got my 4" Rough Country lift. Since then it has slowly been turning into a rig.

The long term goal is to have a cool jeep with a perfect mix of offroad capabilities and at the same time decent road manners. It will be geared way more towards offroad capabilities as I have a seperate daily driver but I dont want a trailer queen at this point in my life so on road legality is a must. As I build it I am selecting parts because of avalability, cost, and most importaintly reliability.

Bought a Or-Fab Sport Cage (love it). I run it with just two thumb screw in the top of my windsheld so I can drop the windsheld really quick.

So you're not going for the jurassic park jeep anymore?

Mazdarx 07-10-2010 01:26 PM

I was going to ask that very same question.

MA88XJDude 07-10-2010 05:08 PM

Nope gave up on that, too much money into a paint job that Im just going to scratch up. Im just painting it white. And starting to make it way more capable offroad.

Just bought my 258 to AX15 clutch plate and disc. Only with a couple thousand miles on them. 7 Bucks.

MA88XJDude 07-13-2010 11:50 PM

Went and pulled my CJ 258 engine today. I also got the whole wiring harness to the jeep, minus the headlight and parking light harness. Also got the whole stock CJ dash. Parts came out of a 1980 CJ.

Grand Total: $150 Off to a good start with this engine swap. (Pics tomarrow)

The plan is to rip out my YJ harness minus the rear and front light harness (as mentioned above). I will then put the CJ 258 and dash in my Jeep and the whole CJ harness. Splicing the headlights, tailights, parking lamps into the CJ harness. Should be FAIRLY easy.

But first I need to get and rebuild a 4.0 head. Then I will still need some headers a AX15 and Dana 300.

MA88XJDude 07-15-2010 12:33 AM

Went to Harbor Freight after work today and bought my 1 ton engine stand.

Got home put it together and tried to mount the engine........My bellhousing bolts werent long enough. No real surprise there lol. This has been going way to good.

I'm going to get some longer bolts tomarrow and then I will take some pictures. I just got dissapointed today and didnt bother taking any pictures.

Oh I also got a CJ tailgate with no rot or even surface rust for 30 bucks. It has a small scratch/ding but after a hour of work and some body filler you will never notice.

From tame looking to peerless offroad machine, I like what you did to your CJ.
