I love reading builds and figured I'd start one since I've got quite a few things to do to the Rubi. I've got an idea of where I'm going, but I'm sure it'll be a work-in-progress for quite some time. Plus, I'm sure I'll change my mind about what I'm going to do as it goes along (at least that's what everyone tells me).
The outline of the build will be on the next post and that's where I'll keep everything summarized.
Yeah me too, dad shot competitively when I was growing up so I spent my weekends at the range or working at the Gun shows. I hear you the madness at the shows right now is crazy, couple buddies closed their shops recently because they sold out of all of their firearms and have no idea when they will be able to get more inventory. Cool is that your first AR lower? I had too many, sold off a couple custom builds last year but still have 4 Ar's and an AR-10. Sold a lot of stuff last year that I wish I would have held onto now, you running 5.56 or another caliber?
Finally go the shocks sorted from Wayne, they are supposed to ship today. It only took 5 months! If I could stop buying guns I would have already had my rear axle, you order yours up yet?
It's my first one that wasn't issued to me... :cheers2:
5.56. It's going to be my little coyote duster.
Haven't ordered the axle yet. Still watching way too many guys running the D44 successfully & getting talked into waiting. Might keep the RJ in the back pocket for a bit. But if this thing even farts loud, it's getting replaced.
June 2009:
"I don't think I've missed anything. The end goal on this is to be able to run 35s very well offroad and as a daily driver. Most offroading is getting to fun camping spots with the kids, or into the backwoods to hunt & fish. However, my wife and I would REALLY like to drive out to Moab or the Rubicon for a week for a kids-free vacation sometime!" Where are the Rubicon - Moab pics??? Interesting thread, fortunately, Calif and Utah will still be there by the time you get there. lol
:rofl:You come take over my practice for a week & bring along someone to watch 4 kids ranging from 6-13 years old & I'll be happy to post those pics!:cheers2:
It's a work in progress. I have a Harris bipod, but am waiting for the adapter. New barrel will be mid-length. I have Daniel Defense rails for the new barrel. I'm HOPING it'll hold 1 MOA out to around 500 yards.
I ordered the DOM for the links tonight. Thanks Imped for the advice on tubing. If anyone is interested, Poly has a 10% off sale right now. You have to have a registered account with them. Coupon code is "START13"
Once Gerald gets back from KOH I'll order the joints, tube adapters, & jam nuts.
Have you seen tmr custom tube adapters? I am not sure it makes a huge difference as most other adapters thread extends from the tube. I thought it was worth mentioning.
I am on a similar path as you are with planning and getting everything organized for my 3/4 link. If you do reconsider currie axles let me know as My friend and I are pricing out options.

I'm going to check them out. Link tubing came in today. Holy crap that stuff is stout. 2.00" x .250" wall for all lowers & front upper, 1.50" x .120" wall for the rear uppers.
Give me a bit on the axles. I'm going to keep the Rubi axles on this Jeep for now, but have another build starting that'll necessitate something with a little more strength
Finally got around to ordering the hydraulic-assist parts from PSC. Lance has everything on order & I should have the parts within a couple of weeks. I already have the ram, mounts, & cooler.
So I have just about everything for the front axle/3-link in the garage:
3-link frame mounts
DOM
JJs
3-link bridge (Clayton)
New shock towers
Fox 2.0 w/res shocks tuned by Alltech Motorsports
New axle mounts for links, shocks, & AR
16" Vanco kit w/knuckles reamed for tie rod flip.
Currie steering w/Savvy tie rod (already installed)
PSC hydraulic-assist for Currie steering
New unit bearings
New Synergy ball joints
Still need to get Evo sleeves & Superior shafts. But at least I'm at the point that once it gets a bit warmer I can get 'er done.
Honestly, the Evo kit are the only ones I've seen (up 'til now) that come pre-cut & ready to install. Their reviews are good & the price is decent.
However, since I saw your question I've looked a little harder & actually found the Synergy kit at Poly. I'm a big fan of Poly Performance. They've always been easy to work with and I like their parts. Not to mention, their prices are better! If you wouldn't have asked that question, I would never have noticed the Synergy kit so thanks!
The reasons above are enough to pick the Synergy kit over Evo. I'll keep using what's worked so far until Poly lets me down (don't see that happening).
PSC stuff is in!!! Much sooner than I thought they'd get it here.
Lance was easy to work with. I just called, told him I was looking for the setup Blaine designed, showed him the Black Magic website so he'd know what I'd already bought, & voila'.
I haven't checked everything yet, & I'm a little anxious about the install, but I'm looking forward to learning & getting HYDRO-ASSIST!
Snagged a steering box skid from Savvy. Also have some really nice LED lights (lighbar for front bumper & 2 backup lights) that I ordered through IEcrawlerTJ01. If you're looking for some LED bars, PM that guy. He'll take good care of you
Also have a new rear seat coming. Corbeau (red & black) to match the front seats.
All-in-all things are stacking up nicely. Jeep is in the garage right now so it's easier to work on, but sucks since it's not drivable & the weather has been beautiful.
The new baby (well now he's 19months) really kind of delayed things, but it's all good. We're doing a pretty good job of turning him into a Jeep kid!
All of my garage time has been spent working on my wife's car. She has a '66 Mustang that I'm re-doing the top end of the motor, converting to disk brakes, and replacing the suspension. Of course the unexpected hiccups come along with doing that as well.
I still have all the Jeep parts stacked up in the garage. Just haven't had the opportunity to do what I want to do with it yet.
The best news is we're going on a family Jeep trip to Colorado next Summer (August) to wheel some trails. My Father-in-law and Brother-in-law both have JKs and we're all going out together. The guys are driving the Jeeps & we're flying the women out & meeting them there. No way in hell I'm driving 8 hours across KS and CO with the wife and kids
So that means the expectations from the wife are to have the Jeep ready by August. :2thumbsup:
That sound's like a great plan. I have dreams of taking my oldest boy out to EJS someday. Trying to negotiate the in-laws motor home and trailer.
