The Rocker Rebuild

OK, to start off I got my 2003 TJ in January of 2008. Not long after that I started to work on it, but I was broke. So, being broke, I put together a hodge podge of parts to get going. I had a 4" short arm lift kit from Skyjacker off of a 97 TJ. it's worked alright but I still know it isn't right. It eats bushings for lunch and I have to replace them about every 6 months. It also throws my driveline geometry off. So it's time for a change.

To start I got:
Rust'ys HD Tie Rod $99.00 + Shipping = $116.65
Rusty's 3" advanced short arm kit with upgrades $1270 + Shipping = $1410.86

I already have a JKS 1" BL that will be going on as well. I am also getting 1" Brown Dog MML to work with a future tummy tuck.

This is what I have for now. Pictures to come!

What sold you on the Rusty's kit? Just curious.

The material is nice and heavy duty, the price was good, the kit has everything you need, and it's made in the USA.

That makes sense to me. Look forward to seeing the results.

Ok, yesterday I went to Beaumont to work on the jeep with a friend of mine Best4x4. We managed to put in the JKS 1 1/4" body lift and I picked up a new toy at Autozone.

First, the body lift was a whole lot bigger job than we had expected. Every bolt was siezed and bonded to the metal bushings. What should have taken us 45 minutes took 6 hours and trips to ACE and Autozone.

When we put it back together I packed the bolts and bushings with marine grease to keep this from happening again.

What no one seems to tell you when you put a body lift on is that you have to extend the fuel filler line. So we went to Autozone and matched up some rubber radiator hose with similar bends to what I needed. Here is what we came up with.

Dayco part # C71766 $12.99 + Tax

You have to match up the bends you need and cut it to length. The tank end fits really well but the filler end will look a bit loose. It will fit air tight when tightened really well with a hose clamp. I didn't take pictures because it was getting dark.

After that we installed my new toy.

Scan gauge II $159.99 - $20 discount = $139.99 + Tax

It turns out to be a pretty neat tool that tells you a lot about what is going on with your engine.

Finally, here is a sneak peek at the new HD tie rod.

I have been rained out today so I'm stuck in the house scheaming what to do next. Hope you guys like the pictures.

Looking good Bob!! All the pictures look great except for the one I'm in lol. Yeah installing the BL was a challenge to say the least on your Jeep. The body mount bolts just didn't want to come off easy and I was truly worried about them ripping off or stripping.

Yeah on the two BL's I've done before this one I always had to find a new hose to extend the fuel filler hose, and vent line. On my LJ I was able to retain the OEM hose since I installed just a 1/2 inch BL, but I had to loosen the hose, and slide it off each end slightly to gain the clearance I needed. Someone should really make an aftermarket hose for anyone installing a BL on a TJ/LJ.

That tie rod is "Massive"...

Ok after being rained out 5 days in a row. I have finally gotten to work on the jeep again. First, I traded out the tie rod. The nut on the drive side came with out much trouble.

The draglink end was a bit more reluctant to leave. This didn't work.

This did!

So once that was out, I matched the two rods up to get things close and put the new tie rod in.

The new one is a lot beefier.

So with that done, we moved on tackeling the front end. We used a floor jack to lift the front end up high enough to get the springs loose.

As with everything else, they fought. The bump stop bolts were rusted pretty good and had to be man handled to get them out. But, eventually the gave up and we got the new springs in.

With the springs changed the control arms were next.

And the upper.

Shocks anyone?

That wrapped it up on the passenger side so we did pretty much the same thing on the driver side.

This bolt on the driver side upper contol arm was a MF! It was frozen really bad but after about an hour we got it out. It was mangled so it had to be replaced.

Another shock.

That was it for today. I'll be back at it tomorrow to do the back. Time for a beer!

The lift is done! I'm not going to say much on this post, I'm spent. I will post a bunch of pictures.

With that lift done, I just ordered a new muffler for the heep. I know I'll get hate mail for it but it's a Cherry Bomb glasspack.

2.5" x 18" model #87529 $38.95 + Shipping = $48.90
Summit raceing

I'm going to take the jeep into the shop tomorrow to have an alignment and lube so I'm going to have them look at and tighten the exhaust manifold. I noticed it was loose today. So that's where we stand today. More to do tomorrow. Later!

Well bad news. I took the jeep to the shop today to have the alignment done and the radiator blew the cap right off. So a new radiator has been ordered.

Drake offroad Aluminum $299.99
Lower radiator hose $19.99
Rock knob $29.99
shipping $A lot
= $399.96
