Project TJ (stretch, tons, 37s, V8)

I've had my TJ for some time now. I bought it basically stock on AR wheels and 31s with 150k-ish on the clock. I lifted it 4" and ran 33s on it for a while as a daily. One day I started getting engine noise (box of marbles). At that point I decided to park it and step up the project a notch or two.

Upon pulling the oil pan I found pieces of the #3 piston scattered. So far I have stretched the rear 7" and got my Sterling 10.5 axle welded up. I have the 37s mounted up on H1 wheels. I have the front axle pulled, but am waiting for my Artec truss system before bringing the D60 under the frame. I also pulled the stock 4 cylinder out last night. I have an SM465 trans ready to go in behind a Vortec fuel injected 350sbc (have to finish pulling out of my GMC Sonoma this weekend. I know I've got to be missing a bunch of stuff, but I'm including a link to my project on Wrangler forum that is pretty well documented. I will post all new updates to both that site and this thread.

Also mods/admins. I placed the thread here as I'm not going in depth into technical instruction, just basic updates on the project. Also a lot of the things I will touch on aren't strictly limited to things you'd do to a TJ. Hope this is an okay place.

Not a huge update, but I got the front axle pulled out this evening. From what I've heard Artec might possibly have my truss to me in the next 3 weeks or so. I suppose I'll start cutting stock brackets off the axle in preparation for welding the truss on. I'm taking a half day off work tomorrow and will have about 5-6 hours to work before the wife gets home. I'll probably work on pulling the 350 out from the truck.

I didn't even see this section (not quite used to this forum format). Thanks for moving to the appropriate area.

I got the old truss cut out and got my new "mini" trusses and link mounts welded in. I am super happy with the stance now. It has stock springs, but with the thicker axle tubes and relocated upper cool buckets in guessing it equates to about a 2.5" lift. I also removed the rear hitch and bumper. I will probably run a plate style bumper. Tomorrow I plan on trying to get the motor pulled from the truck.

Got the motor out of the truck. About to take a cold shower and ride the bike some. Too hot to work on it anymore right now.

I got the stock motor mounts cut off and tacked in place. I will cut the tacks and fully weld them up with the V8 in place. I just mocked them up to get some rough measurements and see if they were even worth fooling with.

So I measured a thousand times and decided that a slight tweet to one of the tacked motor mounts and everything would be perfect. Welded them in dropped the motor in place. I stepped back and everything lined up great......except the height. It sits about 2-3" too high. I cut some heavy channel to length and drilled holes for the rubber mounts. I'm going to bolt them up and place the motor exactly where I want it before burning them in tomorrow.

I did have a spare hour this afternoon and did this. Actually only took about 40 minutes total. I'm very pleased though I didn't wire them yet. I think for the backup lights I'm going to do an led light bar between the body and rear "bumper"/crossmember or possibly a 2" round LED below and to the inside of the tail lights.

Hallelujah!!!! I just got an email from Fusion4x4 that my truss is shipping from Artec today. I'm nothing but pleased with Fusion4x4's service, but as long as I can help it I will never order another product from Artec. My first order was through Summit Racing for a pair of their axle shock mounts which took about 4-5 weeks to come in. The second was this, which took right at 4 weeks. I don't see how it takes so long for something to arrive like this. All that has to be done is to load up the program to the cnc. After they're cut there are a few pieces that need bent. They come unwelded, so really there's no reason that it should take more than a week to ship out. Regardless this was the only specialty item that I had to get from them, so I'll be washing my hands from it now.
Warfnation likes this.

I finally got the Artec truss in this week. I got some free time today and shaved the stock crap off the axle and welded the truss up. I have to spray bomb it, but plan on tossing it under the Jeep for mock up in the next few days.

Got the front axle tossed under. I've got the lower control arms mounted up. I still have to fab up the upper control arm, weld the axle mount, and make a track bar and track bar frame bracket. It's kind of squated because the stock track bar mount is sitting on the diff housing. I will be cutting that off soon. If it doesn't level up a bit I will probably see what a set of JK front springs do for it.

I ordered materials for my track bar today. I will be using Barnes higher end heims. I also plan on finishing the upper control arm this evening.
