you could also just make a coil retainer top and bottom out of 1/4" plate steel, then mount your bump stops off of these.

but a shorter limit strap would be good since a unseated coil is considered by many the same as picking up a tire. with no sprung weight on that perch the tire will have little tracton

Exactly. I mean the weight of the axle and tire may help a little but not much.

But I say go for the coil retainer just because you just spent the money on the limit straps and then you get to do more fab

Everyone loves fab

Thanks!!

Not much for new mods on the TJ, but I do have several trips coming up so hopefully that will lead to some new pictures.

Tentatively looking at:

"The Flats", NC this weekend
"Devil's Playground", NC next weekend
"The Farm", NC in October

And maybe another trip in October. The three places above are all private offroad parks that usually open up their doors twice a year for the public, so I try to take advantage of them when I can.

Most recent project has been getting the new Rescue Vehicle built!

We traded in our 3.7 liter 5 cylinder H3 for an H3 Alpha. 5.3 V8 with 300hp and 320 ft/lbs of torque! This should help tow it through the mountain roads a little better.

This being our tow rig/chase truck, the idea was to have something that could tow and also come get the TJ if I broke down on the trail. So between the OEM options and mods, it has:
  • Rear selectable locker
  • Front limited slip
  • 4 to 1 transfer case
  • 35" M/Ts
  • Front 2" lift
  • Custom belly skids
  • Rock sliders
  • Winch bumper and 9,500lb winch
  • Front and rear tow points

Can't say I'm a fan of Hummers but the stats on it are impressive. Hopefully the front suspension and steering doesn't let you down.

Mox! We liked it too, but the Alpha is a different animal. Besides.... you are color biased!

It's our third H3, we wheeled the first two pretty hard without issues, this one ('08 V8) is supposed to have even stronger steering components.

Currently, that is the plan.

By the way, I took about $3,000 worth of chrome off of the H3 that I'm hoping to get $1,200 or so for on the Hummer boards. The wife is trying to put that towards a pair of Mastercraft seats for the TJ. I don't think I'll argue

Does your wife happen to have a little sister around 20 years old perhaps?

You may have messed up Jay. The way Mel drives you might not be able to keep up with her off road. The last trail we did together in Moab you had to park the tj and ride with her. Now she has a real beast to play with.
Tina and I really like it though.

Just thumbed thru your build... WOW!!!! one sick rig and nice to see that the Rubi 44s are still holding up to the 37's. I'm debating about building mine up or getting a built rig on tons, but man after reading this thread and seeing the pics.... sure has me thinking and debating.

I'd be looking to get RCV's & rear alloys, along with Clayton LA upgrade and TNT rears...etc. etc..
would put me about $5k-$6k and then debate about selling rubi and taking the 6k towards a built rig/buggy... ahhh decisions, decisions... LOL

Great build and might be following along later... lol

Chris

Redlyner,

How were the trepadors? I love that tire, and I loved the look of your rig when you ran them. did you get a fair amount of miles out of em?

Mountain Island is a small island on Mountain Island Lake. I spend so much time wakeboarding around it (and live right across the street from it) I chose it as my location instead of my city- which is Charlotte.

I think about that all of the time. My wife drives the TJ a good bit, so if I went with a buggy, she wouldn't get to drive it at all. Trust me when I say, at this point, it would have been much cheaper to buy someone's built buggy. But oh well, we love the jeep.

It is going to get beat up this weekend at The Flats!

I only had them for a year or so, but I loved them. They got lots of attention on the trail because no one else had them. However, the Pitbull Radials are in a league of their own. Nice on road driving and unreal offroad grip.
