Update 12/11/10
Since the height of the antenna was now much higher, I decided to NOT keep it on during daily driving for the sake of not breaking it off in parking garages or my own garage. With the antenna and spring no longer on, it left the mount connection exposed to the elements. To fix this, I bought a bolt matching the thread pattern of the spring, and cut it to the proper length and then chamfered the bottom edge. It fit quite nicely.
Also, I went back and sealed the grommet using weatherproof silicone. It worked like a charm!
