Project Indecision: A Jeep addict's 06 Unlimited LJ

Project Indecision

I wise man once said, "to know what Jeep fits you, you must first own every single Jeep ever made". Ok, maybe that's not true, but it seems fitting for me. I don't know what my issue is, I'll get 90% through a build, get bored - frustrated - or otherwise and want to sell the thing. Then I'll hit the forums, see, what someone else is building and think - now that would be perfect for me!

Then I made my first trip to Moab. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of awesome wheeling in the northwest, but nothing is like the total experience of Moab, and I don't care where you are from. My WJ did a great job. I had a lot of people in far bigger and more capable Jeeps raise their eyebrows. "How did you get that up here?" It blew my mind with what it could do with such a mild build. I did use every skid plate, and the back end of the Jeep took abuse with the mediocre departure angle. It wasn't that the WJ isn't capable of doing what I was asking it, it just seemed excessively abusive.

What now?

Well... I've never owned a proper LJ - maybe it's time for one of those?

The newest Wrangler I owned before this was a 98. This 2006 has a ton of small updates and refinements that I never experienced in my other Wranglers. Good interior lighting. (that turns on when you open the door!) Very nice shifting 6 speed. AC. Better control stalks and steering wheel. Nicer mirrors (auto dimming rear view with compass and temp gauge) Seriously quiet with the hard top. The best stock stereo I've ever heard in a Wrangler. No leaks, rattles, check engine lights, stuff falling off... This is the nicest Jeep I've ever bought.

Build Plan

Build plan... Exactly... Well?

To me, there are exactly two ways to build a TJ or LJ.

(1) 1/4 ton axles (Front HPD30, TJ44 or 8.8 rear) mild lift, 35's, etc

or

(2) One ton axles (D60 or fab 9 front, 14B, D60, D70, etc rear) mild lift, high line, and 37+ tires.

The thinking man would choose number one. Locked front and rear, this Jeep would be able to go 90% of where number 2 can go, for far less money, better millage, better street manners, and take far less time to do.

Everyone who has checked out my other threads know that I'm not a thinking man. If I build Jeep #1 all I would do is wish I had built Jeep #2. I don't like living by compromise, and that's been the issues with my Jeep builds. I've been trying to build something for everything, and that's just not practical. Saying that, I'm going to build the baddest, most trail capable Jeep I've ever built and do so with a "reasonable" budget.

Very rough plan 1.1A

Front Axle:2003 Superduty BJ Ford HPD60,ARB locker 5.13's Narrowed to 64.5"
Rear Axle: 99 E350 Dana 60, 35 spline axles, ARB locker 5.13's Narrowed to 64.5"
37 Hankook Dynapro ATM mud tires
17" Raceline Beadlocks
Poly performance Cage
Lighting
NP241OR
Hydo Assist
Hydroboost
MCE 4.5" Fenders front and rear
Flatish transmission skid with engine skid
3.5" Metal Cloak coils, and 1.25" body lift
Rancho 9000 series adjustable shocks
3 link front 4 link single triangulated rear
Anti-rocks front and rear

Etc.

Me too. I'm pretty excited. Still need to sell the WJ for funds.

Yup, your LJ is exactly what I SHOULD build, but can't. My grinders, welder and plasma would be so sad.

Thanks! Hopefully it will be ready for Moab next October!

In other news, my buddy and I might drive down for KOH.

With the $2600 I save there and selling my 54K mile 4.0 and 6 speed I could do the swap for the same or less. I'm not a super big fan of manual transmissions anyway.... Plus the 06 wrangler has the right fuel pressure and is returnless.... Uh oh...

OH BOY.

Here we go again.

That's a clean LJ. You know a Jeep was babied when it still has the chrome grill overlay and front bumper caps.

It's stock down to the factory radio. Does the chrome thing come stock? It's the first thing I took off.

What are you trying to say? I've had this for at least a week!

I'm planning on doing the parts gathering first and then do the whole build at once so I can drive it for awhile.
