Heres my second jeep build. Its gonna be rather mild. Just gonna run a 3-5" lift, Ill either make my own or buy a used one for cheap. Gear my axles to 4.56s, and maybe swap out the rear axle to a ford 9 or 8.8. 33 or 35" tires, and a roll cage. Lincoln locked or automatic lockers and skids. Nothing fancy. Im also building a chevy TBI350/turbo 350/gm 203-205 doubler/ 14 bolt/ dana 60 front on 40s crawler as well as a long term build, but thats taking too long and I need a rig thats gonna be more family friendly so I bought this.
1987 jeep cherokee 4.0L straight 6, 21spline aw4, np231, dana 30 front, dana 35 rear, power everything, everything works, it has a small fuel leak, 122k miles. $1000. Im only putting another $1500 into it. I should be pretty close to were I want it.
Also if I have taken anyones project build name please let me know so I can change it.
Its pretty clean for an almost 30 year old vehicle.
Got some things figured out and some things i don't need. Found a set of cj-5 narrow track axles for $200. D30 front D44 rear with 4.29 ratio. I bought these before I figured out I have a D44 rear under the xj. They wont fit nore can I use them because the front is a pass drop, however what it did do for me is gave me a 3.92 and up carrier for the rear d44. So I figure Ill just use the carrier out of the D44 and the LP D30 with 4.88s I have already and swap those into the xj.
This is actually still happening. I found a donor vehicle with a rough country 6.5" long arm lift and a np231 tcase with an sye already installed. Im in the process of swapping out the suspension and tcase now. I already did the front suspension, bleed the brakes, did the 4.88 swaps, and the frame stiffeners. Im doing horrible at posting pics this time. Ill try to get some for tomorow. With the donor rig, Im only 1500 into this thing, so 1000 for the original vehicle and I bought the vehicle with all the stuff on it for 500. Imma sell the donor vehicle and be in this build for 800-1000 bucks. Not bad for a cherokee geared and lifted on 33s.
Still have some odds and ends to tie in. Rear shocks, bump stops, sye, skid plates, weld on the rock sliders, swap the 33s on, rear drive shaft, diff cover gasket/rtv and diff fluids. I have zero idea what height lift this is. I thought it was a 6.5" but when I measured the axle height from the frame it was 6-3/4"s now with the lift on its 9-3/4"s. Which makes zero sense. Pics inside the shop. Ill get better ones later.
Diffs filled, Wheel spacers on, tires swapped, sliders on, Oil pan skid ordered, sway bar quick disconnects acquired, bumpstops ordered. Still have to get or build a tcase skid, swap out some wheel studs, mess with the trac bar some, Get diff covers, and Ill be done, I think.
Got a hold of a lock right that i installed in the front d30, a rear diff skid, an oil pan skid, Front bumpstops, and made some custom qick disconnect sway bar links. Tomorow Im going to make a custom tranny skid, put the tcase skid on and Ill be ready to go wheelin. I also found some 315R16 tires in decent shape, forgot we took some off my gf's old truck. Just gotta buy some wheels for them and Im set with 35s. Sorry my pic taking is horrible for this build, I keep forgetting to post them. Also its really nice this time around to be able to install and build all my own things, saves ALOT of money.
Got alot done in the past few days. Got the skids built and on (had to build one, then bought 2 and modified one of the 2 to fit , built the sway bar links, Got the lock right installed in the front. For the skids I just drilled threw the long arm cross member and taped the cross member to except 3/8s bolts. Im waiting on a track bar since the one I have is garbage and my jeep wonders all over the road with it. I probably broke 10 drill bits making the skids. I bought the 9nth degree oil pan skid, then the skid row tcase skid that I had to shorten the neck on, then use some 1/4" strap as a spacer, then I cut out a piece of 1/4" steel sheet to go from the skid row/rough country cross member, to the oil pan skid. All were drilled and tapped to except 3/8 bolts. Then I cut my sway bar link to length and sleeved it. Random pics Im sure are hard to see.
Said tranny pan skid I made. Lol cut and bent with a torch and a hammer. It was a mother trying to get it above the exhaust pipe and underneath of the oil pan. Nothing pretty by any means of the imagination but, I promise u none of these will go anywhere and paint makes anything look better.
Got some paint on everything. Looks alot better in my opinion. It doesnt look like it but all of the skids and arms are the color of the rear diff cover. The metalic paint hits the flash on my phone weird.
Did some trimming on the fenders. Some painting, come cut and folding. Then went do some flexing. There was a bush in the way of taking a good photo. I still had another 3"s of up travel on the driver side front.
