Project Franken Jeep - CJ7

Well I have gone a couple years with no Jeep after a nasty divorce while I was in the Marines. After a few cars I finally made it back to a 77 Wagoneer. Well what I picked out was a rust bucket with a good motor and failing tranny. After I did alot of upgrades the tranny failed me one too many times. So I decided to let her go. That started a few year drought where I didn't have a car of my own at all. Just used a company car for a daily driver which I am lucky enough to get as a perk from my job. Fast forward to about 3.5 weeks ago. I came across a 79 Jeep CJ-7. It ran good and even started well considering the weather at the time of 15 degrees. I could see some body damage and cancer bubbling up below the paint in places but overall it was in very good condition. After some negotiation I drove her home from the dealership.

Some things didn't work right off the bat. The Speedo was broken, the fuel and temp gauge weren't working, and the dealer told me the 4x4 didn't work. However on the test drive home I locked the hubs and the 4x4 worked fine (think the dealer didn't know a dang thing about locking hubs). The passenger rear shock had its shock body and plunger pulled appart. And the radiator was leaking at the seam on the top.

I got her home in this condition and it was an interesting 28miles in the dark.

In the past 3.5 weeks I've got the following fixed:

-New radiator installed
-Speedo fixed by installing new cable
-Skyjacker shocks installed
-HEI distributor installed after she was VERY hard to start twice in a row
-Overflow bottle installed after I found they were using a coolant bottle with a hose stubbed into it for overflow

What I have delivered or being delivered but not yet installed:
Twin stick kit
CCFabs Tube fenders
Steering damper
Windshield wipers
Spyder Trail Stinger

Here are some images as she sits now. From now on I will take pics as I go.

This is me putting her to work two weeks ago pulling logs out of the woods for firewood...

BTW The reason I picked Franken Jeep for a name is that The vin code states it should have a 304 with a 3speed and a Dana 20 transfer case. But instead she is a 4.2L/Auto/Dana 300. :-/ But hey she runs and drives good so I'm cool with it .

Well got the new CCFab fender mocked up. Its currently getting paint and I'm about to go to an early dinner with the inlaws before I start on the driver side fender. Here is the before and after. They are a pain in the rear having to fit but I love the results!

Stinger installed and testing out the twin stick kit I just installed. Works great in the snow. Thanks everyone for the help so far in the CJ forum.

Here is the stock seat. Obvious cover issue but the frame is also busted and the right rear retainer bolt had broken so I had a constant pimp lean.



Got a Mastercraft Nomad. HUGE improvement. Only thing I don't like is it makes making it past the bolster a bit hard. Also added the Best top doors



Things that also came today that I will be installing over the next couple weeks:

Poisen spyder corner armor -going to open up to TJ wheel opening
Rear springs to replace my worn out springs
Upgraded rear shackle mounts
Heavy duty rear shackles

Installed Poison Spyder Crusher Corners today :-D





Next is to pull them and paint them. Then a M.O.R.E steering upgrade and then to start on the replacement of the rear springs, shackles, and shackle mounts.

I finally did get her up to freeway speeds and that steering upgrade needs to happen before I get her back up over 65.

upgrades I have yet to have time to install. Have a son due on June 1st so I've been doing more work on the house than work on the jeep lately. Did get to drive it alot the past week which always makes me Happy :-D.

Decided I needed an add on cage to keep my daughter and soon to be born son safe. Looked at alot of different options and decided for the price and flexibility to go with a combination of two cages.

Extreme custom parts rear add on cage kit
Rock hard 4x4 couplings

Total cost just shy of 300.00









Found out you need to drill out one side of the coupling kit as both sides have threads in order to make this setup work.







This set up seams to be very strong and is made of heavier wall tubing than the factory cage. I'm pretty happy with the results even though I did it with my little 120V stick welder.

Right after I took these pictures I pulled the poisen spyder armor and im currently painting it out black as well.
