Still waiting on the motor to come out of the Trans Am
In other news, my wiring harness shipped yesterday. Should be here in a few days. He says he's got a security system already wired into it with a remote start, window sensors, blah blah blah... I told him if I were to use all of that stuff my Jeep would never stop *****ing at me.
Mine came with a longer tcase adapter for an NP205, which I don't think will even fit inbetween my frame rails. Just one more reason to keep the D300. Although it could get expensive with the adaptor from Novak.
Bought my transmission this weekend. It's an SM 465. Out of a 79 Chevy 1 ton.

NP205 won't fit left to right in the stock frame rails without a lot of fab work, it'll hang real low when you're done, and with the adapter is really long for a CJ5, as in maybe 10" or 12" left for a driveshaft. I was going to put the same thing into a '76, but once I slid it under the Jeep and got out the tape measure, it just wasn't going to happen.
I really like the SM465; I had one in a Chevy K30 Crew Cab once and it was a brute. If you're looking for a cheap SM465 Jeep swap, try checking around for an '86-'91 SM465 and an '88+ NP241. Remember that Chevy redesigned the 1/2 ton truck in '88, but the 1 ton didn't get the face lift until '91, so while the 1/2 tons got the fancy 4L60E or 5 speed upgrade, the 1 tons were getting leftover SM465 for a few more years. There is a 32 spline output shaft on these units and the standard 6 bolt pattern just like your D300 or NP2xx. I've seen 1 ton '88-'91 NP241 that have the pass drop, and the splines should be the same 32 count as the SM465. Also check the Suburbans. They are chain drive, but have the same low range as your D300. Best of all, they don't have the 23 spline input like most Wrangler guys want, so they are usually almost free for the taking.
Yeah, still discussing tcase options in my head right now. I really would like to use the D300 since I already have it, and I know it's plenty strong. But at the same time I could definitely go out to a junk yard and get something cheaper that would more than likely bolt up.
