Pond Scum

1998 TJ Wrangler SE
2.5L 4 banger, 5 speed
It's (now) my 4th of 6 Jeeps, following an '87 YJ, '96 XJ, and '83 Postal - prior to a '11 Overland and a '98 XJ.

I got this from a guy that said it didn't run. He lied. I haven't even changed the oil yet, pulled the plugs, spun the motor, new battery, fired right up.
The top had leaked for years, the center console was brimming with water.
It was neglected for a while, and had stuff growing in it.
The floors had a thick layer of green stuff, hence the name.
Plus, the name swamp thing has probably been used a million times over, and with a 2.5, its not badass enough for that.

Here's the day my old XJ towed it home:

Wheres waldo.

New seats:

Built a bumper:

Re-built the bumper as a winch bumper.

Got some wheels and tires with tread on, a different top, junkyard cowl panel & wiper motor/assembly, and inspection stickers.

The TJ has been pretty fun as-is.
The 60s are tucked behind my shed for now. I got a few more parts in, but with "only" 2 cars now, I'm gonna focus on simple/driveability stuff. Belly up skid, CB radio, new cage, paint some parts.
As I sell parts off the blue one, I'll be picking things up for this.
But, I'm still focused on the same end result, just going after different parts for the short term.

Sold 5 brown magnums & BFGs, and put the 5 gray ones from the XJ on.

Currently making room for a real cage, gonna do a simplified dash then too.

Added a 1.5" body lift, 1" brown dog mml, and the aluminum ultra high clearance skid from UCF
14" at the belly. almost 3" higher & over 20lbs. less than the stock skid.
more vibes from the poly motor mounts than the driveline, so we're good.
only other thing was modifying the 4x4 shifter cause it was a little wacked.
got the KCs on, not wired yet.
jeepforum'd the headlight bezels black.
installed the wood shift knob from Blue.

Then started work on the roll cage.
got the A pillar pads made, and everything tacked together, next I gotta pull the whole thing out.
but... I broke my T50 trying to unbolt the family bar.

More to come. Just wanted to dump everything in one spot for now.

I like it! So where are those wheels from? I love the pizza cutter look. Did you do an SYE yet, or just the MML, BL, and tummy tuck?

Thanks.
They're 17x7 from a dodge Magnum, check the link in my sig for all the measurements & details.
Stock springs, and no SYE. No vibes from the MML/BL/belly-up.
Here's one more of the skid.

and the cage tube, as I got it from S&W

Hey, any updates? How is the TT with no SYE still treating you?

Haven't done much, but I do need to update this.
It works fine - stock suspension.
Only thing I modified was the gate for the 4WD selector
I'm gonna do an SYE when I put the 8.8 in, since that'll change the height a bit.

Thanks. It's pretty fun. Needs a lunchbox up front though.

hahaha the ipod went straight in the trash.
A turbo 2.5L would probably be a hoot, but... so would a vortec 5.3 or a 4.7L I6
The spark plugs I put in to "get it running" are the only thing the 2.5L will get. Not even oil changes. Sooner it pops, the sooner I'm forced to replace it.

Since I posted here last, I finished up the cage, got a hard top, and picked up LS 8.8.
Also, going to a buddys house this weekend to get my 4.10 hp30 back, its got a bunch of refreshed parts and all the CA brackets boxed. So that will go in here at some point soon.

Love the look! Makes me miss my 97! What tranny mount are you running, Lo Pro or stock?

Shortened a XJ front shaft with a cutoff disc and a battery drill.
It spins up to 75mph without vibration.

I had the lengths of the uppers way off, and was binding it up, causing so much rake.

I worked it out, set the pinion around 15, and pushed the rear back maybe an inch. The track bar & gas tank & diff cover are all very close.

I traded a dana 300 I had for some tires that don't fit.

Then I started this thread:
TJ: hp30, WJ knuckles, new Track Bar

put these on,

which was dumb, because I would later cut the rest of that bracketry off.

IRO C gussets

Frame side TB bracket. The. Worst.

Making progress.

Not making progress.
