Operation "Funsized" - 98 TJ

So first off a little background...

My girlfriend purchased this Jeep almost 4 years ago and it was her daily driver up until 2 months ago when I graciously took it off her hands. She appropirately called it "Funsized". She is 5'2" and a stock Jeep just isn't fun so... playing off her short staure and making the Jeep more capable here we get the name. She didn't want to get rid of it but the constant shifting and no air were starting to get to her driving in town and 30 miles one way to work. Ayyway... her Dad and I have been helping her with different things including wheels and tires, a new top, KC slimlites, a CB radio, and a few other goodies that were really neccesstities and budget items. So now, let the fun begin.

The Jeep when she brought it home... already with the 4" short arm Super Lift and 33" Mickey Thompson MTXs

After a new top, replacing the old rusted wheels, painted black headlight bezels, and Westin nerf bars

The addition of an Olympic grill guard/ brush gaurd combo, grill inserts, and going topless.

OH, and not to mention a full sized spare (nothing fancy but it's better than NOT having one. I think we found the last MTX on the planet.

A little "test drive"... Jeep Jamboree in the Tennessee Mountains, Oak Ridge.
Added the Slimlites, and mirroe relocation brackets.

Not too shabby for the stock 3.07s the aren't locked. (Oh how I despise them)

And as it sits now... can't really see the cutouts of the front bumper but they're there. and rolling on some Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs.

Now for the "To Do" list...

I'm thinking a Currie housing with G2 gears and axles. Probably stick with a Dana 44 and roll either 4.56 or 4.88s
Upgraded suspension... a Currie 4" kit or a 3.5 - 4" long arm kit... not sure on that yet... still researching
Metalcloak above line fenders and flares (front and rear)
Metalcloak sliders
35 or 37" tires... maybe some new wheels. Depends on what I find.
Winch - Looking at a couple different options.
new rear bumper with swing away tire rack (looking at Hansen right now)
and in the distant future a Cummins 4bt swap or something crazy.

I'll switch them over whn I get the chance... I'm not sure why either... I just asked the guy beside me (in a library) to pull this up and check and he can see everything...

Just ordered new upper window sliders to replace the old worn out and wrong color ones and an Aussie to put in the front diff until the bigger axles can be funded.

Walked into my local offroad store this afternoon and some guy ordered a Teraflex hand throttle and hadn't come in to pick it up. Called and actually cancelled the order after the part had already come in. He had already paid for it so... lucky me. Install of the locker and hand throttle to come.

I was also going to tackle the rear main this weekend with an oil change but every autoparts store within 15 miles of my house did not have the seals in stock. Kind of surprised me... not gonna lie. So needless to say, I'm impatiently waiting and it's costing me more money.

HAs anyone figured out why these things are so addictive?

Little update on the progress....

The upper sliders came in to replace the dry rotted and leaking ones that had been resealed already a couple times. Nice and dry on the inside now and no more wind... That's not supposed to be there anyway.

Installed my hand throttle kit... Ran tha hand throttle right alongside the main throttle cable and tied it all in together. Set the tension and tested it out. There have been a few jokes about it making a nice "cruise control" and while I don't recommend it... with some practice it could come in very handy for on road application...

Came up through the center console and shifter boot and wrapped it around the shifter lever. Looks like it's supposed to be there and I love it.

Finally I installed a light to go under the hood. This is a reel light taken from a mid 90s Cheverolet fullsize that mounted to the inner front fender. I can pull the cord out a walk around the passengers side of the Jeep around the back and up to about the door jam on the driver's side. Plenty or cord and the light has 2 magnets mounted to the backside so it can be placed out off the way wheen you need both hands. Picked it up for $10 at a local pick and pull.

More to come.

After a long hiatus ( read college blows) the jeep has finally regained some attention.

Since my last update she was rattled by a drunk driver and broke a rear axle, shock mount, lower control arm, and messed up a quarter panel.

Well she was returned to normal since it was an insurance job and gained a fresh coat of paint all the way around. I'll add those pics in a bit.

Now I've just ordered a new top. Bestop sailcloth replace-a-top and some Monstaliner to cost the tub. Once the parts arrive install will ensue and much interior transformation will be taking place.

The soft top came in yesterday and I put it on.

image-92959846.jpg

While I was changing it out I painted the bows and put on some quick release bow knuckles.

Since I had all that stuff out off the way I decided why not go ahead and freshen up the roll bars.
Before and after. Used vinyl and fabric paint.

Put everything back together today and washed and detailed her. She's a filthy... Well. Clean lady.

Anyway... Looks pretty good I think. More to come.

Well in the last 5 months much has happened. Aside me getting married the jeep has also had some minor improvements.

To start the list, my retaining ring for the passenger's headlight broke. Every bumo I hit on the road would send the light bouncing up and down. While I was replacing those I figured I would upgrade the bulbs so I went with the IPF H4 replacement kit and got some beeter bulbs to put in the housings. MUCH MUCH BETTER.

The side mirrors were both cracked so those got replaced as well.

While rotating the tires I noticed the bushing on the track bar and rear control arms were shot so I order replacement polyurethane ones and just got those put in. RIdes like a Cadilac compared to how things were. THe shocks are next as I am waiting for them to come in. The passenger rer completely popped out of the bushing and it had dry rotted so new shocks should help.

Also got a monstaliner kit and have stripped the interior. Hopefully that will go in sometime in the next few weeks.

Pics to come of the progress.

SO I finally got around to taking picturesw from my camera onto the computer so now a long list of updates...

First, the stock radiator cracked at the plastic cap on top. I put a bead of silicon on top of it just to keep fluid from evaporating out until my replacement ame in. FLushed the whole system and cleaned out the heater core while I was at it. Installed a Drake unit. Pretty happy with it.

The bushing on the rear control arms were shot as well and I got a replacement poly set to go along with a set of shocks for the back. Rides lik a Cadillac compared to what it was. One of the bushing had completely worn dow and come out of the shock housing so it was beyond time to replace them.

Fast forward to a couple weeks ago and a friend and myself were out shooting clays. We saw a mudhole complete with grass and stuff growing in it so I though "Hey, it can't be THAT deep..." I was proven wrong as the Jeep sunk to the body line and I had to get the dozer to pull me out. A winch is in the works as you will see later.

A couple days after that fiasco of a Jeepin experience I drove the Jeep long enough to get everything hot on my way to work. Came out to leave and saw a puddle of grey gunk in the parking lot. Took a look and sure enough it was coming from the front diff. Yummy peanut butter.

That takes us up to this past wek where things get fun again. I rearended a liberty and messed up the front bumper, grille gurad, whatever that was on the Jeep that my then girlfriend no wife, and her dad put on. I took advantage of the opportunity to go ahead and have the adjuster look at it since there was some damage to a fender and things as well. Ended up getting alot more out of it thant what I expected so I turned it in and picked up a pretty fat check.

I got a nice pinstripe down at the college not 3 weeks after getting in all back from the last paintjob and since the adjuster was nice she went ahead and put that on the same claim so that got taken care of as well.
