In 2005 I bought a 1992 XJ with a salvage title. I installed a 4.5" lift, 33"s, rear locker, and a few other typical mods. I wheeled it for the summer and had a blast. But in the back of my mind I always wanted the true jeep experiance, no doors, no top, and a strong aftermarket to build from.
So come July 2006 I sold my XJ and put the money toward this......
A 2006 bone stock LJ that had a previous life as a rental jeep in Hawaii. The factory LJ specs include Dana 30, Dana 44 w/ls, 4.0, auto, and an ugly *** factory stance.
So the first thing I did was pull the end caps out of the bumpers and start ordering parts. I was really impressed with the quality from the Rubicon Express lift on my XJ, so I went ahead and ordered a 4.5" super flex kit subsituted with 3.5" springs. I also got Old Man Emu shocks and shipping include free of charge. I still had the tire/ rim package from my XJ. 33"x12.5"x15" BFG mud terrains on 15"x8" black steel wheels.
I am VERY fortunate to have a primo wheeling spot Here in Farmington, New Mexico.... I picked up 1.25" body lift, motor mount lift, led tail lights, and some used sliders that mount to the body mounts.
The next set of upgrades happend all at once... I work with a guy who traded me a Terra low 4:1, sye, and a Terra 2 low kit for my Glock 9mm. And I purchased a Smittybuilt front and rear XRC bumper, Rockman belley up skid, sliders, and a Novak transfer case shifter.
The Terra low 4:1 only lasted about a year before it self destructed. I dont recommend it......
I didnt really like the style of the Smittybuilt bumpers, and it just so happend a guy I wheel with was selling his JEEPERMAN front and rear bumper with tire carrier.....
My AWESOME girlfriend who supports my nasty jeep habit and even helps me break stuff! lol
Some other mods I had forgotten to mention are... Detroit locker in the rear (my lsd spider gears were ate up), a custom roll cage built by Fabworks here in Farmington, in dash winch controller, ZJ tie rod, and some Gen Rite hood vents.
This past winter I picked up some used and abused 35"x13.50"x15" BFG krawlers for $100. I couldnt afford not to buy these tires! LOL And some used 15"x10" beadlocks to mount them on. I only got two wheeling trips out of them before I decided I decided they were cursed! I broke 2 u joints (which of course destroyed the ears on my axles) and split my transfer case open at the front output during a mild climb my girlfriend was doing. I sold them to another guy and he destroyed his control arm mounts. He sold them to some guy out of state shortly after. LOL And my girlfriend got me a new winch line...3/8"x100' Vicking synthetic winch line AND a Garmin GPS with North America topo software!
So after recovering from the BFG krawler abuse, I got some 35" BFG KM2's LOVE THEM!!! ALso about this time I got some custom tube fenders built by fabworx for a few reasons. The first being my passanger side got into a rock.
And the second reason was a buddy who was parked in front of me before a climb took out my driver side fender. His teenage nephew was playing in his jeep and nocked it out of gear and it rolled into mine. Glad my jeep was there to stop it because we have a lot of cliffs in Choke Cherry Canyon.
I also removed the pin stripes that were on it when I bought the jeep, and decided the front bumper looked a little off...SO I bought a stinger from another friend.
