Buying my second YJ Thursday, my first was a brand new 94' 4.0, did a few mods on it, then sold it in 2000 in mint condition w/36k on the odometer (Had company truck). I sold it for a 96' Grand Cherokee 4x4 to impress a girl, who I later married, figured zip up windows wouldn't work. I kick myself the a$$ every time I see a YJ for getting rid of it.
Fast forward to present day, married 7 years with 2 small kids, 2 small dogs and 2 vette's. One is a 73' roadster which I restored mostly myself. I couldn't have done it without the help of a corvette forum, the assistance I received was invaluable.
I recently found an 87' YJ sitting behind a storage facility in fairly decent condition, has hardtop and doors and half steel doors, no soft top or engine. I tracked down the owner and convinced him to sell it for $1000.
I plan to make a daily driver out of it, but I'm going to start from the frame up, from there I’m still up in the air....back with a 4.0 inline 6, or small V8. Would a small V8 be practicable for an everyday driver? I don't plan on heavy offroading, mild at best (getting too old).
I’m looking forward to pestering everybody on this forum for information as my build progresses, as you can tell, I’m very long winded….
This poor thing just got forgotten didn't it? Get it fixed up and good luck. Gave ya a click free. You have to have like 50 posts or something like that for them to actually show without the link. Just takes a few days of active posting.
Welcome to the forum and nice looking YJ! Looks like you have the perfect start for a SBC swap. Mine has a 5.7 TPI motor from an 88 Vette and can be driven all day long with absolutley no problems at all, I love it!
Wait...you are saying you can drive your Jeep ALL day without any problems? Wow...is that an accomplishment for a YJ? Us JK guys can go a few weeks...maybe a month without problems.
Im kidding...the way that was phrased though...just didnt look right.

5.7YJ- that is one sweet looking engine! To the OP, have fun with it and it looks like you got a really good deal there, definitely a diamond in the rough.
Finished my inspection, it’s a Peugeot tranny with a NP207. I decided to go w/ a Chevy 350, AX 15 tranny. What does the forum think of the NP207 transfer case, I don’t read anything positive…
I am always the first one preaching to people don’t buy the first year of any vehicle and look what I did, my wife even called me out on it !!
If I go with the AX15 tranny, will I need to change the tranny mount? Will the NP207 mount to the AX15 without an adaptor?
What are your thoughts on the Novak motor to tranny adaptor and GM motor mounts ?
I hired a flatbed to the house, then hitched a towbar to it to take it to the shop where it sits now. Caught a case of the stomach bug, so no further progress.
Finally got some work done on the Jeep, had to take a vacation day to get anything done. Cleaned the grease off the engine, then test fitted with the tub. It's time now to tear down the frame tomorrow…. Today will involve a short drive to Austin for a heavy dose of tailgating, then a fine feast of Buffalo.
Not much progress between football games and birthdays. Shaved off the remains of the old motor mounts, shopping for parts. Will start frame teardown this weekend, found hole in poly gas tank .
The story I got when I found this jeep is that the lift kit was only a year old when it was parked in 2003. Can anyone tell me what size lift it is? here's what I know:
**** Cepek
part # on front springs = 84002, P52733
part# on rear springs = 84102, P52734
Progress report, frame blasted and coated w/por15, pics to come...
Sandblasting has got to be one of the worst jobs in the world....
I bought it with no engine, so a v8 only seemed logical. Found out the lift was 3 1/2".
Here are some progress pictures, I hope to get more done in the next few weeks. The time changes is killing my production, the place I'm working on it is great, plenty of room, full power, secure and very close to house but you don't want to be here at sundown, the mosquito's are murder and big enough to carry away small children.
