...P.S. exciting Jeep information may be coming to this thread soon!!!
As Ryan hinted at, here's the exciting news!
Late Sunday night Ryan sent me an email pointing me to this Craigslist ad!
"Selling a Ford 8.8 rear axle setup. Has a Riddler Heavy Duty differential cover, 4.88 gears, and an Aussie locker. Currently set up for leaf springs and will drop directly into a YJ.
Also selling a Dana 30 front axle setup, HP, with Posi Locker and 4.88 gears. Also set up for leaf springs and will drop directly into a YJ.
The rear axle is ready to use, and the Dana 30 could use a knuckle.
They were evidently off a YJ on 36 or 37s some time in the past and when they upgraded to 60s they took them off of their rig, still covered in mud, and sold them to the TJ kid I bought them from, where they sat in a back yard in a tarp for the last 5 months or so.
They're not really ready to drop right in, neccesarily. I need to replace a couple seals and possibly replace a ball-joint or two, along with obviously the fluids and a lube job. (Not sure about the knuckle. They seem fine, but I need to investigate further) Additionally I need to source the proper e-brake cables, u-joints, u-bolts, u-bolt plates, axle shims? (depending on what angle the previous guy welded them on), etc.
All the rust seems to be surface only, so I'll make sure to wirebrush and re-coat the axles. Even the brake lines look perfect.
I still need to do some more investigating, as I have no idea what year either axle came out of or what set-up the previous guy was running. My '95 has upgraded u-joints on the D30, so I need to verify what the new axle has. There's no tags on the axles, so I'll have to do some major digging.
My understanding is that the 8.8 came with a pinion flange, but mine has a traditional yoke, so it looks like everything, once cleaned up, should already be done and set to bolt in, but we'll see.
