Third weekend in a row of wheeling, and the only one with any real carnage.

Went up to Western NH with a group from Mass *Krawlers to scout some trails for an North Shore Jeeps' run next month. Started out pretty easy trying to find the actual trails, and then the access road became a lot more difficult than the leader imagined they'd be. Apparently a lot has changed in the last year since he was there. One guy (his first run out) flopped in a rock garden when a boulder under his driver front tire gave out. Whole Jeep went forwards then sideways. I was in line behind him and went up the obstacle that everyone else had winched over, and shredded my valve cap against a rock while rushing up an obstacle (driver front) so that went flat pretty quickly with no way to seal it or put air back in. So we swapped my spare on, and I winched the guy back over via a snatch-block on a tree.

At that point it was already 6 PM (we left the meet-up point at 10 AM) and people were exhausted, but the trail was nowhere near over. LOTS of rocks, which I love, but after 8 hours already on the trail it was getting tiring. A few more rocky hill climbs, made worse by the fact that I was second to last and the lesser-built Jeeps had torn them up, and we were out to the head of the trail... still a few miles of moderate C6s to the actual road. Ended up leaving the woods and on pavement around 8:30... at which point we were driving along when a Cherokee with us got deathwobble and took out a mailbox on the side of the road. Around the same time a TJ with us got the same thing, just no mailbox involved. We stopped to find out that the TJs (stock) tie rod was a pretzel, and his stabilizer had a hole in it and no pressure built up. So we bent it back somewhat straight, since he was driving the 2 hours back to Mass with me.

Cherokee lived close by and limped home at 30 MPH.

My rear passenger tire also had a slow leak due to the balancing bead being moved when I aired them down and rubbed a rock, so we stopped half way home and refilled my (at that point) 8 PSI tire.

Oh, and half-way through the trail my speedometer, odometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, volt gauge, oil pressure gauge, and thermostat gauge stopped working... along with my radio and interior convenience light. Fuses behind the glovebox were fine... so I drove home with no speedometer and no music... quite the 2 hour trip.

I also came out this morning to a completely flat rear passenger tire. So I just inflated it and am off to Town Fair to have them re-balanced.

QUITE the trip. Look forward to going back.

Looks like a fun trail, nice pics !

I feel your pain on the tires...I ran 3 sets of BFG AT's and I can say that all but one of them ended up with a patch of some kind. That's 11 tires...I finally decided to get stronger tires when I jumped to 35's. The AT's do great but I just don't think they're tough enough in the rocks.

Luckily I've never actually damaged them. The the flat (non-valve stem) was because the balancing weight shifted and the 12.5 psi allowed some air through. A Very slow leak. But both tires were just re-balanced at Town Fair and both are holding air without issue.

It may be... I do want to go on record though saying I wheel the s**t out of the A/Ts, and they've never left me stranded. May take a little negotiation, but people always turn around and are like "wait, those are only A/Ts?!".

And yeah. I just asked at TFT about pricing. $251/tire for KM2s, $259/tire for MTR/Ks. Both are on rebate for a few more weeks. Decisions, decisions.

That place looks like fun. Don't quite see what that guy flopped on but sometimes it's the smallest things that can mess you up.

I'd love to check that place out if you go again.

Well. I just bought 2 (of 4) MTR/Ks. Gonna split it up on my billing cycle.

Aint that the truth! Mine have been hooking up great on everything I try, but I do need to air down to around 8/9 psi.

Do wish they balanced a bit better tho, mine are in need of another balance..

Yup! Technically bought all 4, they just let me split up the pay and wait to pick them up.

Total in the store was $1,212 for 4 with the lifetime balance/rotation/road hazard/whatever. $80 rebate so we're looking at just over $1,100 with tax and everything. Now, to sell my A/Ts, which should offset some of that cost. A/Ts have less than 8k so I should be able to get a fair amount for them.

Nice! Do you plan on running them on your current wheels? Just curious if you're worried about smashing another stem or not. It's something I've never thought about occurring, but My stems are protected behind the beadlock ring.

Keep it up! I'm dying to go wheeling but have no free weekends due to friends' weddings, bachelor parties, and vacations so I've been wheeling vicariously through you guys haha

Hey man!
Yeah the valve stem thing is an interesting predicament. I've honestly wondered if putting the metal valve caps on would assist in keeping the stems from being crushed if the situation were to happen again. It was the metal threaded schreader valve that was crushed and made ovalish, crushing the pin in the open position and letting the air out. Maybe metal caps would help that.

Wheels would be nice. But I do like the look of stock rims for now. Maybe in a million years when I've bought a house and a new truck I'll spend some cash on Racelines or something.

And yeah. The wheeling has been amazing. It's not worth it to build these things and just have them sit. Getting to take her out and push myself is always fun, and I continue to be impressed with how capable this rig is. New tires should make a huge difference in her performance on the rocks.
