My 79 CJ5 Rebuild

I decided I wanted to rebuild an old car and what better than a CJ5. I posted this thread so my self and others can see the progress I will be making over the next couple of months. I am interested in hearing everyone’s comments and suggestions and hopefully you guys will be able to help me with any problems I will run into on the way.

O.K. here are the specs:
1979 CJ5
AMC 258 4.2L Straight 6
T150 3 Speed Tranny
Dana 30 Front Axel
AMC 20 Rear Axel (Boo)
Dana 20 Transfer Case
35X12.50 BFG All Terrains
4 Inch Skyjacker Suspension lift

Everything is in OK working order. Oil leak from every where possible, other than that motor very strong. Syncros shot in tranny. Tub and frame very badly rusted. Interior was trashed. And so my project begins.

Just bought a 1979 cj5 to rebuild. Everything was in good working order, had a couple real bad oil leaks and a lot of rust tub and frame.

Frames pretty rotted by the rear shackles. Gonna have to come up with some kind of nifty brace to weld.

Sorry I havent Posted anything recently I havent had time to work on my jeep. My wife and I just had our first baby. 8.8 lb baby boy. I should be back up and runnin this week sometime

Ok last Sunday I removed the tranny and transfer case which both needed to be rebuilt.
Tranny pulled

I was not able to work work on the jeep all week due to my baby being born so I just got back in to the garage today and this is what i discovered.
My buddy must have gotten bored while I was taken care of the family because this is all the stuff he did while I was away.

Tranny Before

Tranny rebuilt. New syncros and 1st and 2nd gear.

He also found time to polish up the old side steps he is really proud of this

He also took a whiz wheel with a wire brush and went over the entire frame to get all the surface rust off. That is where we stand now. Time to fix some of the wholes in the frame.

Hopefully when I started my lift I have friends like yours around. He did agood cleaning and repainting that tranny as well as the side steps. Must of have been your baby shower gift.

He loves jeeps as much as I do it probally hurt him to just see it sit there for a week with no progress. Im sure ill see a bill from him for a case of beer or two.

Ok got a few things done yesterday. Fixed a hole in the frame by the drives side rear shackle.

Welding new metal in:

Ran out of argon in the middle of weld so I just have to grind it down some a put a nice weld across:

All of the body mounts were real week and rotting away so I had to cut them out so I can weld new plates in

Now all I have to do is get the new metal cut and drill holes in so I can weld back to frame.

I also pulled the cover on both the front a rear gears inspected them and put back togehter. Painted also.

Parts for the motor should be here tommorow so I will start ripping that apart when the parts get here.
