Probably both in a matter of half a second. We hit a pretty big hole at speed. Lu's legs are just too long for my Jeep lol. I'm going to pad the dash bar but my knees never got close all week.

I finally pulled the jeep out of the garage to clean it up and check it over. With exception to the steering which I still need to fix, everything looks like it held up really well during the trip.

I have some real measurements finally too. As it sits in the pictures, I have 20 1/4" to the belly (21" to the bottom of the frame rail) with the tires @20psi. 7.5" of uptravel in the rear and 7.25" of uptravel up front.

Spring weights are 125/200 in the front w/ 1" of pre-load, and 100/185 in the rear with 2" of pre-load. That should be just about right once I add the winch to the front and the spare mount in the rear to get me 2" of pre-load in the front and 3" in the rear which is spot on with what Wayne recommends.

Spare tire is just thrown up there about where I want to mount it.

That rear mounting spot looks good. It looks as though it'll put enough weight back there to keep the *** planted (as if that monstrous rear axle isn't enough) but not to high up to mess w your center of gravity.

Can you post up a mockup of what the mount will look like to support the spare or are you doing it like how Redlyner has his mounted?

Looks awful clean and shinny, don't hate the man who like a clean Jeep, hate him because he dosen't get it dirty. And you definitely get your dirty.

Honestly, I'm just going to start building it and it will turn out how ever it turns out just like everything else

I almost sprayed tire shine on it, almost...

I don't mind getting it dirty, but I hate working on a dirty/muddy Jeep. I've got to pull the steering apart and I want to do a little more fab work now that I've had a little break from it all.

This might have been addressed already but I noticed you don't have a cluster set up on the dash. Do you plan on adding any instruments like speedo, temp, tach, etc?

Yes, I most definitely need those items and a bunch of other things I still haven't had a chance to finish (kill switch, intercom, radio, ect..). I did the Moab trip without any guages and pretty much figured it would either be running fine or not running at all, that's all I needed to know

I finally took my steering box apart to see what happened on Helldorado. Things don't look good Not sure if I will just buy another stock box and try again or just hand my next pay check to PSC for one of their boxes.

A piece of the piston broke off. Anyone have any idea why that would happen? I was expecting a broken sector shaft tooth or something but this one seems odd to me.


Housing looks pretty much toast from all the chips and pieces being crushed and ground against the cylinder wall when I tried to turn to the right.

Does the steering gear sit flat against it mount at all 3 bolt locations and the mount doesn't flex allowing the housing to distort?
Only other way for that to happen is that there was a piece of metal in there where it jammed against.
I would check the mount, seems like it happened in the only spot you really needed to crank the steering.
I would use a used box, till you figure out the cause, would be hurtfull to the wallet to destroy a PSC box

I'm thinking it's possible that I didn't get all of the shavings out of the box from drilling and tapping. It may be that a shaving jammed the piston and caused it to crack.

The box does sit flat against the mounting bolt sleeves. However, your right, it would suck to have this happen to a brand new PSC box. Just not sure I want to keep wasting money on stock boxes or put it towards the PSC box that is already drilled and tapped. If I can find one at the junkyard I might try one more time.

Are the boxes in Cherokees the same? Wranglers are pretty hard to come by but the local JY is filled with XJs.
