Mike's 98' ZJ Build Thread

Hello there, I'm Mike and I'm new to this. I've driven vehicles before and always wanted to do mods to them, but couldn't. So when I turned 18 I really wanted a vehicle that I could Mod and have fun with all the time! My family has owned many American vehicles, some were Jeeps (most chevy's or gm's, some dodge's), and even some friends of mine used to have Jeeps. I enjoyed them all the time. So I made up my mind to buy myself a Jeep! No matter what!

After looking around for weeks (3 to be exact) I finally found a Jeep that just magnetized me to it! (and I could afford haha). It was a 98' 5.9L and it had 132k miles on it. To my surprize it was already lifted, and seemingly good taken care of. I couldn't resist. My part of the family that I live with at the moment all told me NOT to buy this. But I did anyways, I was NOT going to let that go.

I apologize for not putting up its current mods (since it did come with some, lift for example and I do know it was an air intake, just don't know what kind or anything from it)

and here are some pics from the day after I got it (Yes, I immediately tried to go mudding on a little bit of mud that was left (not much as you can see) and get it in the sand!)

This here is for my future mods and plans!- (All in due time as $$ comes along, I'll make time if the $$ is there )

-First and foremost, fix everything in it that might be wrong
----Fixing up the tailgate! (fixed! kinda)
----Planning on fixing the back speakers at this moment! (fixed, back sound bar still needs work)
-Possibly a CB radio, however not sure yet
-Clean the inside, outside and engine up so its nice and presentable
-Get a new paint job and fix any rust it may have under the paint
-Put in new headlight and taillights (possibly fog lights)
-Put in new lift, one that I'll know what it is since I have no idea what it has at this moment ( appears to be a rusty's )
-Put in some body armor
-Install a winch
-Change the inside lighting so its better
-Put in new air intake and newer engine equips
-Put in better exhaust (possibly double)
-More to come hopefully!

After that is done, or If I can, next would be to get me a wrangler!

cool to see another NC guy, the jeep looks great, for 3500 it seems like a great deal esp for a 5.9L, unfortunately it looks like someone stole the original grill and swapped it out for a grill for another grand cherokee.

Thanks Glad to see there's more guys in NC as well

As for the grill, now that I know (I feel for not knowing) I'll try to look for an original one and put it in there!

First thing done!

For my first ''fix'', I tried to fix the tailgate! (with help from the forum ) and succeeded!

My tailgate wouldn't open at all, and so I choose that to be my first fix! since I do need it to be able to open up! Hence I took out as many screws as I could in the first place, then tried to open/move the top of the panel a bit, so my hand would fit and try to grab on to something. At first I didn't open it much, afraid of cracking it. But after a few reads from the forum, I just said heck with it, and then opened it up more and stuck my hand in there (still pretty hard since it only gave me so much clearance). I found the latch and pulled on it, and voila! it opened! then I took my hand out and opened the tailgate completely!

afterward I took the whole panel off!

And yes, I didn't see that screw on there, and I did rip it off from the panel by mistake!

Then I took as much of the plastic covering off, so I could reach in there to spray the linkage with some oil. I didn't take it all off, but enough to reach here

Afterward I sprayed all that and then everything else on here with lithium grease!

It fixed the opening problem, however I do have to pull it with my hand still to open it at times, My sister's boyfriend says he has some better ''penetrating stuff'' that I shall put on it and see if that fixes it for the long run so I can put the panel back on!

I did break most of these, except the one I'm holding

And so, I bought new ones for when I have to put it back on

Here are some more pics I took of it. All around and underneath it. Just so I have a starting point of how it looks, and from what it'll be. Again sorry for not knowing its current lift or mods to it.

Where does that red wire go to?

Seems to me like you have a nice intake, so you shouldn't worry about that unless you want to stick a snorkel on it. On the other hand, maybe you should buy a new filter. That thing looks nasty...

As for the lift, I'm no expert, but it seems kind of odd that they didn't replace the stock control arms. Other than that, I have no idea what kind it is or how much lift is there.

Nice Jeep! Looks pretty darn clean!

Thank you!

That red wire is for the amp, which is a problem I am trying to fix at this moment
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f20/my-back-speakers-arent-working-suggestions-669993/

The intake is nice, however I don't know what it is, other than K&N brand, and that makes me uncomfortable. Plus I'd like to put something there for myself. As for the filter I take it that its normal color is red! SO YES I do have to get a new filter! I'll see if I do it tomorrow

I can't answer for the lift, 1 because I have no idea about Jeep parts just yet, but I'll learn! and 2 because I have no idea which lift that is! but now that I notice there is a sticker on the back for rusty's off road that came with the vehicle, I'll try to get a pic of that tomorrow.

If that looks clean, then I don't know how its gonna look when I do clean it! All those pictures show a lot of rust and parts that seem to need some cleaning! Hopefully after I get out of boot I'll have time to do all those plans ( and its going to be warmer as well ) and I'm planning on cleaning that engine up as well, I like my rig to look clean, even if I dirty it all the time, I'll just clean it back up
