had a nice ride, went out to rancho again, found some.new areas to explore. drove through the spring and found a deep rut, got out of it and once I got back to land I had water on the driver side floor board. water only went halfway up the door so I have to pull the carpet and find the leak. got to finally use my winch, extended all the cables and made a little bracket to.hol the box under the hood and hooked up the wireless. had to pull a couple of samurais out of clay ruts. then I picked up a trailer for $18.95. not bad for 20bucks. and the florida 500 parade contacte me and wants me to lead the zombie float in the parade.

Thinking in my head I got the jeep from an old guy so I doubt there was an audio system in it. I began to tare things apart.

Well tracing wires all over the jeep I found a cable like wire. A phone jack, and then traced those and under the back seat, I pulled the carpet up. I found like a computer brain of some sort.

I found a brand and model number. I used our best friend google and turns out its a cell phone amplifier. I called a company that has them. Theyre all over seas. Its military grade.

Now Im wondering what this guy did for a living... Or hobby. just the amplifier goes for 300 used. with all the wires and antenna I found in the spare tire wheel well. He said he could probably find a buyer for around 400.
I know this was a while back, but I just stumbled across it.

I'm curious, what was the brand and model? Did it have a label on the other side with an electronic serial number(ESN)? It looks like a Motorola transceiver for an analog cellphone. I used to work for SW Bell installing those back in the mid '90s and I've probably installed hundreds of those. Technically, they are "military grade" hardware, but there's nothing special about that - they have a small, internal rubber seal that helps to keep dust out of the housing, but they are not waterproof. Their electronics are not hardened against EMP attack or anything like that.

They are probably worth money overseas in less-developed areas because they have a lot more power than any handheld phone (3 watts vs. .6 watts) so they can reach cell towers that are fewer and farther between (especially with externally mounted high-gain antennas), and they work with old analog systems that are typical in third-world areas. They were not secure as they weren't scrambled and didn't have satellite capabilities. They had no two-way, point-to-point capabilities so they can't be used like a CB. Since they are analog-only, they are pretty much worthless here in the states, or anywhere they have switched over to digital-only cellphone format.

BTW, that phone jack port was for an external handset, and with the extension wire you found it was typically mounted on a pedestal near the driver or on the dash.

Anyway, that was a cool find. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. If you haven't sold it for overseas use, hang on to it. It's an old relic that may be worth putting in a museum some day.

so had to change the caliper.on the driverside mow, siezed coming home. hit 90k mi. so its about time to start replacing all the ware n tare.parts I guess. upgrade to whatcha ma call it calipers from napa auto parts. fixed.that then did a night ride at rancho, on the way out there I could feel a lack of power like something was holding me back got home and all you could smell was burnt gear oil. tried to pull the fill plug to check fluid in the rear but they used RTV.in the damn plug. gona heat it up and get a new 14mm alen key on a socket.to.try n break it open. my brothers yota on 37s was in the parking lot so I mallcrawled.up it.
