The good:
-Complete.
-1 owner.
-The last guy bought a whole bunch of new brake parts for it so i should have everything needed to get it stopping.
-I have a complete extra fuel system so i should have everything needed to get it fueled.
-Last guy rebuilt carb to like new condition, and had it running.
-I have all original paperwork still.
The bad:
-Doesnt drive. Needs brakes done, transmission drained and filled most likely, and fuel system cleaned or replaced. Transmission does shift though.
-Some rust.
-Looks like roof leaked more this winter and the headliner likely isn't salvageable.
- Interior is complete but no good...but i have a few mexican blankets lol.
-Smoke in the exhaust, but oil is old and hasnt been changed, and I have yet to run any MMO or ATF through it.
Hopefully I can have it moving under its own power before long.
So, here's some pics of the condition the first time I got it. Its got a little rust in the typical spots (lower rear wheel wells, one spot driver rear sear floor at the front of the wheel well, but otherwise seems remarkably clean. Body mounts and everything are good, frame appears solid, everything is there.
Interior is complete but blown out from the desert sitting. Unfortunately the headliner fell completely in the year that the other guy had it, prolly got rained on and leaked.
passenger side
driver rear floor at the wheel well
driver rear
dinged driver fender
i have a spare tailgate and a spare trim piece.
dinged passenger fender
interior
rear section completely fell now which is sad.
All the paperwork including the original window sticker, deposit receipt, sales receipts, etc.
Poured some gas in the carb and cranked it. It sat for about a year since the last guy started it.
Let it run a bit. It definitely smokes from the tailpipe. But the oil is 15 years old. I will change t and run a quart of ATF in the crank case for a bit to hopefully clear it up.
I've fired it up after sitting a few days a couple different times since the above video and it's absolutely scary how quickly it starts and how smooth and quiet it idles.
Grabbed a set of rollers on jeep wheels for $20. I will swap the 30's onto the wagoneer wheels and then scrap the 5 lug wheels and should come out about even.
Then at least I'll have a set of tires that hold air and have a little life left in them.
You've been making me want one of these for years Marn, but my wife would probably murder me and any out here on the east coast are almost guaranteed to be full on rust buckets.
Just the front brakes. New rotors, new studs, packed bearings, new calipers, new soft hoses, new pads. Did this on both sides then called it quits because it was like a hunnert degrees out.
fun fun fun. Next is the master cylinder, then the rear drums. I might do those one at a time over the next few days if I have time in the afternoon.
Well that was an absolutely miserable day in the sun, but the brakes are finished. Got both sides done and couldn't get the drums to fit for the life of me. I've done drums dozens of times and everything was on right. Eventually started comparing the old shoes to the new ones and there were some super minor differences. Ran to the store and got another set of shoes. 15 minutes later the first side was finished and the drum slipped right on.
Anyway! It runs drives AND stops now. It does produce a bunch of smoke any time you hit the gas though :-/
Next stop is getting the tires cjanged over, then I will replace the severly damaged fule filler neck and fuel fill hose that goes into the tank, as well as the tank itself.
Well the 74 just drove its first appreciable distance in 13 or so years.
I pulled it around from my back yard to my driveway to get working on the gas tank. It was hot, and not all my pieces matched up, so I only got the old tank out and disconnected. I had to cut some rubbery bits, and as mentioned my fuel filler neck, which actually needs replaced, doesnt match up, or i'm missing the mounting flange or something.
anyway, fired it up and drove it back around to the back of my house without a gas tank. My buddy has a 74 he is parting out, so i'll snag the parts out of that.
It's got a pretty strong clunk when the wheels are turned either direction in the front. I'm told, by someone in the know, its probably the clutches in the q-trac sticking. Hopefully some figure-8's on dry pavement will un stick things.
