Last March, I placed an order for a set of Nitto Trail Grapplers, in 37 x 12.50. I also pulled the trigger on a set of XD Addict Machined, size 17 x 9. I got them mounted and balanced, bolted up the RE 1.5" SOA leaf springs, mounted the axles, and got myself a rolling frame again.

I cut off the existing engine mount brackets, and set the engine, trans, and t-case into position.



I took some measurements to determine where the firewall will be, and made a mockup of the firewall. In this pic, you can see the cardboard templates I made for the new engine mount brackets.


Engine mount brackets made out of 3/16" steel plate.


Partially welded on.

I added shock hoops up front, and built a ladder bar for the rear.





My Jeep didn't come with any doors, so I went searching for a nice set of half doors on craigslist and on ebay. The search went on for months, and my perseverance finally paid off, and I scored this outstanding set on ebay. The mirrors came with the doors, but they were pretty much non-adjustable due to corrosion. I purchased a new pair for about $50.00.

I purchased a set of these Solid covers for the 44's. At $65.00 each, they are by far the best value I was able to find. Heavy duty doesn't begin to describe how sturdy these things are.

The following may tick off the YJ faithful crowd. You have been warned....

I decided to change up the front end. I bought a CJ front end, and sold off my YJ front end to a guy that had wrecked the front end of his YJ. As I got more into learning about Jeeps, I realized that I liked the more traditional appearance of the CJ's. These CJ parts were rough looking, but basically pretty straight and solid, except for the hood, which has a bunch of holes that need mending. I sent the parts out for a thorough sandblasting, and when they came back totally rust and paint free, I sprayed two coats of 2 part epoxy primer on them, to preserve them. Here's a before and after comparison.

I stripped her down the bare frame, and began the prep work to paint it. I sprayed the insides of the frame rails with a product that Eastwood sells, called Internal Frame Coating. It protects the inside of the frame rails from getting rusty. It smells really bad, which tells me it must work well.
After a week of evenings getting the surfaces relatively smooth, I sprayed two coats of 2 part epoxy primer, followed by 3 coats of high build primer.



After sanding the frame down with 400 grit paper, I blew it off and tack ragged it, and sprayed 3 coats of Nissan Structural Grey metallic single stage paint. If you look closely, you can see part of the ladder bar crossmember, just in front of the rear leaf spring mounts. Also, I had cut off most of the rear bumper bracket, and replaced it with a beefy 1-1/2" x 4" rectangular tubing. I plan on building or buying a rear bumper with a swingout tire carrier, so I wanted it to mount to something that can take the weight.

I don't know if this is common knowledge, but I discovered that a pressure washer does a very good job of removing factory undercoating.



Nice and clean!



Meanwhile, I had gotten started replacing the rotted sheet metal on the tub. I replaced the driver's side and the passenger side floors, and did some patching in the factory front rollbar mount areas.

I brought home the rebuilt front D44 from the driveline shop. It now has 4.55:1 gears, a Detroit Locker, and Superior Discovery axles.
Member vacj5 made a set of 1" boom shackles for me.

I made the now painted frame into a roller again. I built a skid plate for the new fuel cell out of 11 gauge steel diamond plate.

Trans came home, completely rebuilt with a high performance rebuild kit, and a full manual reverse pattern valvebody. The shop plugged the stock vent, which is on the bottom behind the torque converter, to the top at the rear of the case. I will attach a rubber hose to the fitting and run it up to the frame, to minimize water getting inside the trans.
Next to the trans is a PTC custom 9-1/2" torque converter, that is set up to achieve a stall speed of 2,600 rpm.
During the engine/trans mock-up, the height of the trans mount on the trans was determined to be too tall. To fix it, I cut off 3 inches, and had a welding shop weld a 3/4" thick aluminum plate to the remaining mount.
Since I had some left over silver gray paint from my last project, I sprayed a couple coats on the trans, followed by a couple coats of clear.

Excellent choice on the CJ front end. You know that because it has a CJ front end on it, you'll need to toss a set of purple hornies on for your exhaust.

Yes, they seem to be the "go to" muffler for Jeeps, especially CJ's. The last time I ran glasspack mufflers, I was a teenager in high school, and that was back in the late 1970's. I'm going to stray from the beaten path, and go with a pair of Hooker AeroChambers. I want power and a good sound, but I also want to enjoy my stereo.
