M38a1 Offroad Project

I'm starting this thread to show off the project that my wife and I have been working on. I bought this M38a1 in the spring of 2012. I've previously owned a 1956 CJ5 and bunch of old Chevy's. The Jeep is in really good shape for its age, its a 1954, except all the ID plates are missing so I don't have any way to know the history of it.
When I bought the Jeep it was stock except for the paint, a rollcage, old T-Bird seats, a really heavy PTO winch, and a homemade metal hardtop. The hardtop got ditched immediately, it wasn't even bolted on when I drove home. We put some 31in Maxxis Bighorn tires and 2.5in lift springs and drove all summer. We did some local trails and had some fun.1385934356654.jpg

I played in some mud

1385934596488.jpg

Shortly after the mud, I was driving home and the motor started to make this horrible sound and lost power. F-head was done. I already wanted a 4 speed so I parked the Jeep till I could come up with a plan.

I found a shop in town to rent so we moved all our stuff in

1385935025808.jpg

I found a 1973 CJ5 that had been wrecked in a junkyard. I traded my original axles, engine, tranny, and T-case for the newer stuff. Now I had a Dana 30, Dana 44 with one piece axles, T18 (6.32 1st), and Dana 20. I also snagged a running SBC 400. It helps to be friends with the owner. I stripped the Jeep and got to work.
1385935367708.jpg

I knew I needed to reinforce the frame, so I welded in some boxing plates.
1385935462257.jpg

I bolted my drivetrain together with a Novak adapter.
1385935531885.jpg

And swung it in to build mounts.
1385935605491.jpg

Then I started on the suspension. We're running 2.5in lift Rubicon Express YJ springs. I mounted them using beefy parts from Ruffstuff.

I moved the rear axle back and the front forward to stretch out the wheelbase. We had a set of 37in Cooper's from my M1008 sitting in the shop, so we bought some wheels and put them on. We had to radius the wheel wells in the back to make room. We kept the lift height low, so the center of gravity wouldn't be raised too far.
1385936124531.jpg

Since the 37s weren't in the original plan, we've decided to steal the ferd 9in out of her Bronco since its getting a 14 bolt outta the crew cab.
1385936320676.jpg
Don't worry, the crew cab is getting all the parts from the 2nd M1008.
1385936428466.jpg

I mounted the front spring hangers on a piece of 2x4 for the front bumper.
1385936522596.jpg

We put the tires on, the front fenders and hood, then rolled it out.1385936587805.jpg
Eventually we're gonna replace the Dana 30 with a Bronco width, passenger side drop Dana 44.
And that brings us up to the present. Next up is getting the Astro van steering box mounted and bracing the frame. The factory cross member in front is going to be replaced with something a little smaller and further forward.

I'm planning to buy or build some tube fenders for the front. We also need to finish boxing the frame. We started on a tranny cover, but I found a better way to build one, so the 1st version is gonna get replaced. Hopefully later this spring or early summer, we can get it back in the road. The idea is to paint it in its original green and put the correct canvas top on it and paint the markings for the SeaBees, since my father was a SeaBee in Vietnam. I'm sure there is a lot I've left out, but feel free to ask any questions. I will try and keep this updated as we go along.

Loving the build. The stance is great. That thing will be a blast with that 400.

Thanks! I can't wait to get it up to the Oregon Dunes... they're only a couple hours up the road...

Looks great! I will be following this build. My Grandfather was a SeaBee in WWII. I like the idea.

Are those beefy shackle mounts part of the spring kit, or something separate? I just don't like the looks of the stock mounts on my own CJ and and thought it would be good to strengthen that point somehow when I put on a 3" lift. Where'd they come from?

We used the 64in spring hangers and wayback shackle hangers on the rear. I frenched the spring hanger into the frame an inch.
1385997092748.jpg

In the front we used some tabs and some greasable DOM sleeves. Everything came from RuffStuff Specialties. Its all 1/4in and stout. I highly recommend his product.

Man that thing is awesome! It's hard to find anything like that up here in Alaska.

Sub'd love this build I plan to do a mild build like this with my boys in a few years with a m38a1 I found in a farmers field, I'm still working on a price from him but someday it will be ours. Good work!

Nothing new here unfortunately... I was pretty busy through the holidays. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I'm glad I started this thread though, yesterday my phone with all my build up pictures on it got ran over in the woods. Oh well, I was due for another one soon anyway. Hopefully i'll get back to work this week or next. Latersglad

I had some help in the shop this weekend. We mounted the Astro steering box and squared up my rear suspension. In the previous pics everything was tacked together and mocked up. I pulled all the running gear outta the Jeep and rolled it over, onto the rollcage. It put the frame at about 4 feet high. Perfect for working on. My wife and father were a huge help to me.

1392688171857.jpg

Now I need to finish boxing the rear of the frame.
