Attack of the Death Wobble!

Had my first episode of death wobble coming home from wheeling last weekend. The yesterday morning on the interstate it occurred again. Pretty awesome stuff. It was a fantastic way to wake myself up on the commute in.

I threw Homer up on jackstands after I got home from work and started to inspect. I found some pretty bad off ball joints.
I have it on a jack and I slowly let it down in the video. You can see the space disappear as it starts to carry it's own weight. New ball joints will be here friday. I opted for MOOG parts as I've yet to make my millions.

New MOOG ball joints installed over the weekend. Jeep feels rock-solid now. Pretty excited to have this over and done with. check out the first post for a link to the details.

Synergy order should be here this week. Got a few bits for the front end. Wanted to get things out of harms way.

Sub'd.

1.) Dumb question but ball joints for what? I've experienced DW a few times and am afraid a new tie rod will not cure it 100%

2.) My fam has 2 houses in Gatlinburg so I spend a TON of time there but know of nowhere to wheel. Any suggestions when I'm down there? I know there's a club in Knoxville and am familiar with the area so traveling wouldn't be bad when I'm down there.

ACE. BFG. Hi-Lift. Zone. RC. Pro Comp. ORV. Bestop.

Now I need more money.

Thanks for the sub!

Ball joints connect the front axle shaft's knuckles to the union bearing assembly that holds your brakes. You have four(4) total ball joints on your front axle. When these wear down they get a little sloppy and wreck all sorts of havoc on your Jeep. A quick way to see if your's are still good is to jack the truck up to where you can get a pry-bar under the front tires. Have a buddy pry up and down on the pry-bar as you watch the ball joints. There should be no movement. If you see any play at all...time to upgrade.

As for Knoxville wheeling, we have some of the best trail in the south-east! Coal Creek Offroad (or Windrock) has 72,000 acres of wheeling. Check them out here. We are up there nearly every weekend. Also check out Knox Offroad. They setup rides every weekend somewhere in east TN.

Well today was a fun day for the JK!

New parts arrived from Poly Performance-
  • JKUR sway bar motor relocation kit
  • JK steering stabilizer relocation kit
  • 1.5" DOM clamp with 1/2" mounting tab for steering stabilizer to hookup to my Ruff Stuff tie-rod

(You'll notice two of the kits in the photo because I ordered extras for a buddy)


Also decided to do a little spring cleaning and change all the JK's fluids-
Wow, what a difference it made! I'm guessing they had never been changed before.
  • Changed diff fluid f/r
  • Changed t-case fluid
  • Changed manual transmission fluid (syncromesh only, people)

So after changing my fluids last night I noticed my idler pulley was flopping around a little. I went and grabbed another and changed it out real quick. Very easy job. Use two 3/8" ratchets - one with a 13mm socket on it. The one without a socket goes on the tensioner in the square hole to loosen the belt. Slip the belt off the idler and replace. DO NOT torque to 45ft lbs, as the manual states. I read multiple forum posts where owners broke bolts off and had a major headache sorting out the mess. I just went a little past tight and will check again tonight. I used a little blue loctite.



I took this photo and then laid my phone down on the bumper.
....big mistake....
After tightening everything down I jumped in the Jeep for a quick test drive down the road.

The resulting mutilated iPhone that slid off my front bumper at 40mph and subsuquently was run over 3-4 more times before I found it...


It still works perfectly. Lets see a Samsung Galaxy do that!

Electric Sway-Bar Relocation Kit Install

Finally found some time to install one of the kits I ordered from Poly Performance.
It was really straight forward. Took maybe 30-40 minutes total. I opted to simply cut the crashbar half way down the vertical beams and then grind down/re-paint. Really happy with how much clearance it gives...but I definitely still need a bumper. I have my heart set on the Poison Spyder JK Brawler bar because it retains the factory bolting locations and factory driving lamps.

Looks good. Check out the RC hybrid stubby for a cheap, good looking, and strong bumper. If you search a few threads you can actually see mine (also detonator).

Very nice! Good to see another detonator. I have a Poison Spyder Brawler bar in the works. Trying to get the engineering right for their Brawler stinger with plate steel instead of DOM supports.

What winch are you running in that thing?

Ahhhhh. Makes sense to me now, otherwise I would have warned you to stay far away from PS.

I have a smitty XRC8 comp in it. I had an old non-comp version and it served me quite well and even survived a head on collision and kept working. I have never had an issue with it and had to have done upwards of 100 pulls (mostly trees and other vehicles). I wouldn't count it out if you are looking at winches.

Flex test with the tractor on this beautiful east-tn spring evening.
Got 26" under the front wheel in stock form. Not too shabby!

Curiously, why would you stay far away from PS?

Finally got the Synergy steering stabilizer relocation kit installed. It's nice to have the stabilizer back on the truck. It definitely does make a difference. I also noticed my trackbar is moving from side-to-side. I will have to sort that out later this summer.

Really happy to have everything up and out of harm's way.

Edit: This was also my first solo attempt at welding. I had to weld the tabs onto the clamp. It went...okay.

Update: I've had the currie DOM clamp on the truck for a few months now. It's complete trash. After once alignment all the hex bolts stripped out. The shop was cussing me when I showed up to pickup the Jeep. I'll be removing this setup and replacing with a u-bolt style retainer.
