Are the boots or boot covering the two pieces of your driveshaft in good shape? You may need to lubricate the driveshaft splines. I've heard squeaks there before. Mainly the front.... I know my boot has been torn to shreads by rocks and I need to lube mine.... just keep forgetting.

Just for the record Kate, I changed out my rear u-joints today (yes the same ones I was going to change three weeks ago), lubed my slip yoke and changed the transfer case fluid. My rear u-jont axle side was missing a few needle bearings and while it didn't appear to have any play when your tried to move it, it had a good amount once I dropped the shaft. All of my clunks, thunks and bangs are gone and it shifts soo much smoother now.

Good morning JeepForum! I had a fairly productive day yesterday. While my house was infested with grown men playing Magic - I was hanging out in the driveway.

Got my sockets and whatnot sorted out and I dropped the rear driveshaft. I knew there was a problem almost immediately when the (new) u-joint wouldn't rotate. Anything look wrong to you guys?

Nope- not yet. I have the front bumper on minus the winch right now. I didn't take any pics of that because its not new.

Steps cant be mounted yet because I don't have means to drill into the body at the moment.

I was going to do the rear bumper and pick up a new u-joint after work today but I completely forgot that I have Class M classes today and tomorrow after work.

Yeah- no big deal. It was only stopping the u-joint from rotating. Who needs rotation anyway - linear velocity is where its all at!

Remind me to bring a big ole box of u-joints when we go wheeling.
Nice tool set by the way.

Yep - my house still smells like teenage boy. BO and shame. Its unpleasant.

I think this was just an install issue - have a feeling my buddy banged on it too hard and compromised the seal. Yet again... further proof to always just do **** myself.

So- I am driving with just the front driveshaft until I can get it fixed. I am keeping it under 50 and taking it easy on the acceleration. However, I did notice that the gearing seems very different. I am actually using 1st - and it seems a bit torquier as well. I have the same axles with the same gearing... anyone have any clue why I am noticing such a big difference between front and rear wheel drive?

That is unpleasant. I thought Magic died years ago.

That is interesting...The only thing I can think of is maybe the front axle has been replaced sometime in the past with a junk yard axle, that happened to have a gear ratio different than stock. Or the previous owner only re-geared the front.

There is less drag on your tcase without the front shaft. even with it in 2wd the hubs are still turning the front end and that translates into more parts moving all the time.

You buy a bike the next you know you'll be buying a truck to transport the bike, and tow a Jeep buggy named Alice.

I see nothing wrong with that plan. I bought a bike with my tax return, you won't regret it.
