Well after getting the Jeep mostly done I figured it was time to turn to the trailer for a little bit. I have a run scheduled for late sept and with my work schedule the next month, free time is gonna be very rare. I NEED to spend all my free time trying to get the jeep and trailer ready for the haul to the Gulches in SC.
The trailer I bought from Phil is everything I could ask for plus more. I could not be any happier with this purchase and to have gotten it from a friend who I know took care of it means even more.
The only thing I really needed to do with the trailer is what most everyone has to do when they get one. WELD SOME TIE-DOWN POINTS ON IT.
The trailer has stake pockets along the side but no D-rings or anything. I dont want to use the stake pockets for 2 reasons. 1) the hooks for my straps dont even fit in them 2) even if they did fit i dont want to put that side stress on my straps, I have over $100 in straps and I dont want to ruin any of them.
I like this Idea www.rsetiedowns.com/tie_downs/
. But Ive heard they have a problem actually delivering there product. So I took some measurements off of my trailer myself and sent them to Eddie(BESRK) and he said he will cut some out for me on his plasma table.
In the meantime though I bought 4 of these http://www.uscargocontrol.com/Ratche...-Mounting-Ring
As you can see this trailer is AWESOME, but lacks tie down points
First thing I did was start painting the D-rings. Obviously I cant paint the part that will be getting welded yet but i figured it'd be a lot easier to paint the D rings themselves before they get welded on.
Heres 2 of the 4
After that I hooked up the trailer and moved it in into the driveway. Then I loaded the jeep so I know where the mounts need to go.
The jeep will sit a little further forward than this, I just need to remove the blocks of wood so i can move it up.
Then I rigged a strap to the axle like I was strapping it down and pulled it tight to where the Dring will be welded. I did this so that the D-ring will be mounted at the perfect angle of the strap so I dont have side tension on the Dring. If that makes sense
After that I ground down the paint and tac'd it in place
Once I got all 4 tac'd in place I pulled the jeep off the trailer and backed the trailer into the garage so I can weld it in with my MM175.
I did a 3 pass weld on it as I REALLY dont want these to break off. If they do Im SCREWED.
I got the rear ones fully welded in. I will weld the front ones tomorrow morning then finish painting everything.
