Today I drove out to Wilmington and picked up my axles. Fresh 4.56 gears. I also ended up having them weld up the 8.8 spiders. I never really run my jeep on the street.

Not sure how much I'm going to be able to get done this weekend, We're under a tropical hurrican warning. Even if a hurricane doesnt hit us its supposed to pour rain and winds up for 50-60MPH this weekend. Pretty crummy weather to be grinding and welding.

new 4.56 Ring and pinion

Glad you got your axles picked up! wish I could have gone with ya, too much work. I hope those welds hold up, the gears should make a HUGE difference in power. if i lose my temper again, you might have my 350 sooner than you think! I got the roll bar out and the windshield folded and pushed the Heep into the garage. Need to get a couple stitches in the back of my head too. Hahahaha, i was tryin to lower the roll bar out of the jeep, slipped, bounced off the tire and ended up a bleeding mess in the driveway. Hahahaha, I wish I could have seen it myself!

Is your guy gonna come help you wire it up?? If you pull that 350 it'll sit in my garage while I rebuild it.... and collect parts. Just what i need. another project haha

No bueno on the stitches. You should've just called me to help you. You know I work right down the street from you.

Meh, hopefully it knocked some sense into me! Hahaha, I do have a helluva headache and my neck is killin me. Bled all over one of my shirts too. Oh well, no brain; no pain!

On a serious note, those welds don't look sufficient. Hopefully its just the pictures; but last time I welded spiders, we used almost 2 lbs of rod. Not bashing the job you got done, just stating it doesn't look solid from that pic. I have seen how you drive and heard enough stories of your off road escapades to know that YOU need to over-engineer EVERYTHING you do! Hahahaha

Yea that's kinda what I thought when I first popped the cover. It has a weld between the spiders on all four corners on both sides and the spiders are welded to the carrier on 3 sides on both sides as well. I researched some pics and I see both. Some FILL it with filler and some just do it like its done on mine and say ther've been running it for years. Im not sure.

Well, only 1 way to find out if it holds up....... Beat the snot out of Her!!!

If the welds have good penetration and are thick and heavy, they should hold. Just be prepared.

Well, did he offer any sort of warranty? If he did, don't touch it! If he didn't..... I would run it with 220 stick.

Today I decided to spend a little time on my rear axle. Started at about 9AM.

First thing I did was cut off all the old brackets and grind everything smooth

After that I decided to try my hand at welding the tubes. This was my first time I tried welding tubes. Turned out pretty good. I did the welds in small 1-2" beads. Alternating sides. I pre-heated with a propane torch, burned with my HH140 using flux core, post-heated then wrapped a welding blanket around the weld to let it cool at an even temp. I left the blanket on until the weld was 100% cool then moved to my next weld. Took me about 4 hrs total.

some pics of the welds.

Then i slung the axle under the hoopty.

now comes my predicament. I originally wanted to stretch 3" using waggy springs but I havent been able to find any locally. I've been looking for a couple months. So then I figured I'll just stretch it 1" using the new Ruffstuff perches I bought. because of the 1" stretch and the belly up I did I will need a new driveshaft. I just don't know if its worth a new driveshaft for only a 1" stretch.... Plus with the trans/tcase up so high now I think my double cardon will start binding. Also when I lowed the jeep onto the new axle it appears I sit about 1" lower on my driver side. My springs dont look bent but for some reason its sitting crooked......

What should I do?

Heres how the jeep is sitting at the end of today. (It sitting high because its on jackstands)
