The snow is melting and the temps are rising, so maybe just maybe I'll be able to get out and take a look at that rear axle seal.

I went out and dove into the D35 axle seal......mistake.
First off the seal Napa gave me wasn't even close. Second the seal won't come out. I tried to pop it out, all that happened was it got all screwed up. The rubber ripped out and the metal ring bent. I gave up. I have no friggin' clue how to go about getting the seal out, without taking it to someone and paying them to do it, and I refuse to do that. Buying a seal for the 35 is one thing, paying $90 a shop hour for someone to replace it, forget it. I'll spend that money on the 8.8 before I do that. I need to get the seal fixed, or drive around leaking fluid, as this is my daily driver and I don't have everything I need to get the 8.8 in. I'll think about it awhile, and if anyone has an idea, let me know. I hate my jeep today. |

If the metal bent just continue bending it until it's to a point where u can get it out.

I may take another shot at it once I'm not so mad at it. But it bent pretty good, and I'm worried about hurting the bearings behind the seal.

I sent you via PM earlier how I removed my bearing and seal. I have the tool if you want to borrow. But, I don't know if it will pull the seal only without the bearings to chase them from the tube. At this point, your bearings are probably pretty good; my tool can extract them both, but I don't know if the bearings will survive enough to reuse.
You may get a set with the new seals, just in case; you can always return them if you don't use them. Quote:

I'm beginning to think everything I've read and every "how to" I've looked at doesn't apply to my D35. When I pulled the seal all that came out was a rubber seal. Everything I've seen / read shows a rubber seal inside a metal retainer. When I tried to pull out the metal retainier, it gave way, bent. As I look inside the axle tube it doesn't even look like there is anything that would pull out of the axle tube. It appears this flange, that the seal was in, which is now bent and useless, is one with the axle tube, not a seperate piece. The part Napa gave me is a metal retainer with a rubber seal inside it....so I'm confused.....and beaten.
It appears the D35 is officially toast...done, finished, busted. It'll roll, but it'll leak like a broken faucet while doing so. No more wheeling for me, at least not until the 8.8 is in and the front geared to match. I need to find a new jeep. ![]() |

I ordered Solid diff covers for the D30 and the 8.8. It's another step towards the swap.

It's a new day, and I had a new attitude. Went out and gave the seal another look. No toast after all......
![]() Turns out the seal that was in there...see that, was in there...came all the way out to the end of the axle tube and had a lip on it, so it did look as if it was one with the tube. The one I got a Napa has no lip....there's what was confusing me. OLD SEAL: ![]() Nice huh? It's all chewed to pieces. I ran to AutoZone last night and bought a seal puller for $10.....funny how the right tool makes things easier. It still put up a fight though. I think letting it sit in PB blaster all night helped too. NEW SEAL: ![]() See, no lip. NEW vs OLD: ![]() I haven't gotten it back in yet, because I don't have a seal driver. I will be running to the store when the wife gets home from work. The right tool should make it easier....I hope. |

Woo-hoo! That's great news. I'm glad you got it out.
You can probably cheat on the driver, since it's on the end of the axle tube, just put a larger piece of something solid over the new seal so you can hit it in the center and drive the seal straight (and not crooked). Be sure to clean the end of the axle tube good before you start; don't forget to grease up the seal before trying to stuff it in there. You also may try putting the seal in the freezer for a few minutes to shrink it, may make it a bit less fussy to install. |
