JeepWJ26 Build--Johnny Cash Build
Thought it was about time to start a build thread. Just finished up school for the semester, so I now have time to enjoy the summer and the Jeep. Its a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. I originally bought the Jeep after I got into an accident with my 99 TJ. I planned on getting a lift and all the normal stuff when I was in search of one. I think the WJ's look real good if there done right.

For the build itself, I name it the Johnny Cash Jeep Build. Why? Because I am going with the black theme, but keeping it clean and nothing over the top. My Dad came up with the name because, if you know Johnny Cash, you know they call him the Man in Black. The build itself is one that is going to take time as I am in college. I want it to be clean looking, but definitly not your everyday WJ. It will be my daily driver w/ occasional offroad use.

How I bought it: Stock

- lift (2.5-3 inch)
- Upgraded Shocks
- Wheels/Rims
- Black out (what ever I think will look good)
- Bull bar
- Light bar
- fog lights
- And whatever else I come up with

I have a buddy who welds real well and friends in the auto mechanic profession. Everything will be done right and clean. Looking forward to it all. Let me know what you guys think. Suggestions, comments, and questions are welcome. Thanks.

This is to keep the thread organized:

First thing I did was the tinted tail lights. Cheap and easy.

I had the faded gray cladding, so after doing some searches on here and other places, I decided to paint the cladding and grille black. I did it a little differently then most people, but the visible coat is Rustoleum bedliner.

Being in college and being on a budget made it a little diffacult to decide on a lift. I knew I was 2.5-3 inches of lift. After searching, I decided to give Kolak a call. He was a huge help and I decided to go with a 2.5 coil spring lift. I went with Old Man Emu springs purchased from Kolak. The plan is to match them up with a nice set of shocks, but I have not decided on what shocks yet. After a week or two of work I will be buying those along with isulators (thanks billzcat) to complete the lift. Here's a picture of the coil springs.

Thanks man. I used VHT nightshades. I did a decent amount of prep work first before I sprayed them.

Went down to the shore house the other weekend. Took a few pictures. I also tinted the front turn signals on the headlights before these pictures. I am looking into getting new head lights, so I decided to use the old ones as a test to see what the blacked out turn signals would look like. I think it came out decent. You might be able to see them in one of the pictures below.

My headlights have been an issue, but I have ignored it. I knew they were not going to be a part of the Jeep much longer, so I took them off and tinted the turn signals just to see how it would look. I did not spend much time on them, so they did not turn out the best. Im looking into getting new headlights. Im looking into getting black headlights to go with the theme of the build. I have been on ebay looking at the different ones they have. Any suggestions would be great. Below is a picture of the fogged headlight.

So I have been thinking a lot about a possible paint job to the hood of "Johnny Cash." Ive seen it done online to another Jeep, and I thought it turned out good. However, I think with my black Jeep its going to turn out awesome. Im thinking of going with a flat/matte black which I think would go great with the factory black paint. The other color I was thinking of was metallic silver or gunmetal grey. Leaning more towards the flat/matte black though. Below I did a quick draw up of what Im thinking. The "F" stands for factory. The areas with the "F" will stay factory, the other areas will be the painted area. This is a daily driver and will only occasionally get used offroad. Any ideas or opinions are welcome.

Its official. Ill be having the hood painted. Going with flat black on the factory black.

There is a place near me that sells really good auto paint. I am going for a quality job, so I will be getting whatever paint comes highly recommended. Im going with the flat black. I think it will look great. It wont be too much, but it will be something that makes the Jeep different from others.

Just checking and giving anyone who is interested an update. If you have not noticed, I come up with ideas and some of them follow through and some of them dont. For now, the hood is still going to be painted, but I am waiting until I finish putting my audio system together. Just finished building the first of two boxes today. Still need to carpet and fiberglass, but that will be done when I finish building the second box. Thanks to Towerdude's sterio build in the WJ section, it came out good and I still have plenty of room. I will be running two 12's and then two smaller speakers in the smaller boxes you see mounted to the big box. Most likely 6x9's or the next size down. Let me know what you think.

Did you get the hood done?

JeepWJ26 06-17-2011 06:16 PM

^ No. Waiting until I finish the audio system. I can do it whenever, but I want to finish the system because I started it and am in to it now. Ill post pics of the complete system and painted hood when they are finished.

The time now is 05:42 AM.
