Yesterday I cut off the factory shock mounts and a few tabs off the 14 bolt. I also started removing the leaf spring mounts, but it started to get dark and late.
Tried to pull the shafts out, but all of the bolts holding the shafts in wouldn't budge with my air impact. I'm going to borrow my buddy's electric impact (I couldn't find my corded one in my messy garage) to hopefully get them out. I hope to possibly start removing factory mounts on my 60 front as well today, depending on what time I'm going to help a friend move. I will get some photos later.
Broke a bolt trying out the pinion guard... Not sure how i'm going to get it out. Hoping that I will be able to pull the pinion out after removing the carrier to be able to weld something on it, or redrill it.
the 16 bolts that hold the axle shafts in are all stuck... Not sure how to get those out either. Any suggestions would be very helpful.
mounts on the 14 bolt are off. Still haven't found my camera so still using cell phone pics.
thanks. Still need to figure out how to get the broken bolt out and the axle bolts out.
With a new job offer, I should hopefully be having some good money coming in to go towards the jeep. Also Will be moving to Indiana next summer/fall for this job. I will commute for the first 6-8 months. the 75 miles one way and then move between Columbus IN and Indy.
This is what mine looked like and all of the axle bolts and pinion bolts came out fairly easily. I feel like someone must have overtorqued the heck out of yours for them to be stuck because your axle is a lot less weathered/rusted than mine was and none of my bolts were rusted at all.
what year is yours out of? Is that a dually rear axle?
I believe it is a 1977 based on a stamping on the ring gear. It is a cab and chassis so it is a dually with 63.5 WMS. I literally had to cut the brake drums off. I got it because it came with 4.56 gears and was a good width.
I thought it was a dually or C&C axle because the brakes are wider and the drums appear to be closer to spring mounts.
I'm going to be running a ford HP 60 front which is 69" wide or so.
I'd give heating the bolts a try. Nothing here to hurt. I don't know what else you do besides get a bigger impact wrench and cross your fingers.
I have an HP60 as well. I plan to narrow it some probably down to 64 or so. I need to be conscious of my width for tire cover purposes. the nice thing with the 14 bolt axles is that you can change width by changing hubs and I have a set of SRW hubs I can use if my plans change.
I run TSLs currently. I can get IROks cheaper and I can get a no questions asked warranty on the IRoks and teh Iroks are cheaper.
If the Rockers weren't so wide, I would get them in a heart beat. For the trails I do, I'm not sure that they would fit being 16.5" wide. That and the wheels I want to run are 9.5 and the rockers recommend a 12" wheel.
