Clearing Code P0068

So while I was on the way to Moab my CEL came on at the Colorado / Utah border. I thought the trip was over. I ended up with code P0068 after doing the key dance. JF had a bunch of info on it, but it also sounded like I might be chasing my tail for a few days sorting it out. Not the way I planned to spend the next few days.

I discovered my air intake temperature sensor was dirty. I have a Banks Ram Air Intake. It actually looked scorched. I cleaned it up with some brake cleaner and let it dry. The nice royal blue color was showing all the way around it. Reinstalled - CEL gone. Went wheeling

Squaring a Triangulated Four Link

After a recent trip to TnT Customs I learner their way of squaring a triangulated four link from their shop foreman. It made sense. Duh.

Step one: Using a carpenters square (the L shaped thing) place the longe side flush on the WMS and take the measurement of the the distance to the frame (short side). Make them match.

Step Two: Then measure from a known point on the frame to a known point axle for length ( the LCA's). Make them match.

Step Three: Bolt up.

Step Four: Check pinion/DS angle.

Step Five adjust pinion/DS as needed.

So I noticed in Moab that my passenger side rear tire was rubbing on my fender but the drivers side was not. I knew that the last time I messed with the four link the passenger side was longer, but the measurements from the center body mount were the same. I also knew I was not completely square, but I was tracking straight and had no diveline vibes so I didn't care. Until now.

Today I took all of the arms off. I centered the axle first. I have 11" from WMS to frame on each side. I set the pinion at the same time since I kept a floor jack underneath it while I was working.

Then I set the lenght. So from the center body mount to the axle (at a known point on both sides) was 42 1/2". I kept the side that was not rubbing the same and based my measurements off of that. After bringing one side in, which causes the other to swing out off of the center axis of the triangle...I brought the other back...Measured and measured again till they were the same. This ended up giving me a 97 1/2" wheel base.

Test run again, but I think I shouldn't be rubbing now.

Removing Factory Badging

While I was in Moab a buddy told me I should remove the "Sport" decal from the Jeep since the model badge didn't mean much anymore. He had a point.



I used a head gun set to 600 degrees and hit each letter for a few seconds. Then I used my wifed pan scraper to scrape off the letters. They came off easily.



I used Goo Gone to remove the remaining adhesive.



New clean look.

Securing the OX Cable

Since the OX locker was installed I have used tie wrap to hold the cable to the frame. I have used several renditions of tie wrap. Once I had it secured to the shock tube, I used double loops, single strands of heavy wrap securing it to the frame...they all have the same problem...it's plastic and it snaps over time. It does not hold up to the elements.



Today I secured the cable to the frame with some clamps I got from NAPA. The clamps were in the electrical isle, but I have used them for a number of different things.

The end product.



Hopefully this is the last time I have to worry about this cable.

Thanks man. Wish I could have seen the new diesel Jeep before you left for Durango. Hopefully I can get down to Black Bear Pass and some of the others in your area later this summer.

Had a good run yesterday... It ran pretty smooth on it's first wheeling trip.

We have made a tradition of a multi day San Juan trip every August... Running all those passes and camping. Keep it in mind.

Great build. Those TNT corners really complete the rear end. You're lucky that you live close enough to go pick them up instead of dropping $120 to get them shipped out to you (my unfortunate case with them...) Look forward to seeing what comes next though - any plans on front TNT tubes?

Yeah, I am going to do their front tubes with the 3" flare at some point this summer. I am taking a bit of a break from wrenching for a frew weeks and just driving

Going back to Moab next weekend

Jeeps lookin good man, Im glad I came across your build. Did you rear antirock and exhaust get in the way of your rear 4link when stuffed?

As far as the exhaust goes I have a turn down right after the muffler. I don't have a tube extending to the rear of the Jeep. I am not in an emissions testing/vehicle inspection area so I haven't been terribly concerned with that - yet. It is a bit louder, but making a foray to Denver where I can get to a shop with a tube bender or whatever to get the exhaust run has not been high on my list.

I did have to pay attention to how long the turn down was though since the UCA was close at the suspension drooped.

My rear Anti-Rock has been a work in progress. The tube that the torsion bar is mounted in sits just below the tub and above the parking brake mount. The UCA's are free and clear of that cross tube.

My current problem with the rear antirock is the arms. There are solutions to it, just weighing the options now and deciding whether or not its enough to care about right now. I took what started as the TJ bolt on kit and switched it around and put it in front of the axle with a universal tube.

The reason I have the arms pointed up into the wheel well and not level (or closer to) is that the heim joints are extremely close to hitting the coil retainer as they droop out. Right now they are not hitting, but that is why I had them canted up so the arm could could drop.

My problem is being created by the axle side brackets. Right now they are welded on to the rear of the axle pointing toward where original bolt on kit was mounted. I know that if I cut them off and put them on the front of the axle pointing toward the anti rock in its current location all of my problems would be solved. I haven't wanted to do it though becuase I hope that rear D44 is short lived. I am working my way toward some heavier running gear.

As far as full stuff, I have not been able to get the arm to contact the upper inside of the wheel well.

I thought I lost these pictures, but I recently found them! Here is the Jeep in 2008. I bought it in 2007 and started to wheel it in 2008. This is how it looked off the lot. Zero mods.

How cute it was... it's amazing how tiny, and almost carlike stock jeeps look to me these days, especially looking back on pictures of some of our jeeps pre-addiction.
