jedired's '98 XJ Build
Back in March of 2007 I bought my first Jeep. It's a '98 XJ with 96k miles on the clock.
I'm having trouble finding pictures of the car when I first purchased it, but here are pictures from my first project...
Krylon Fusion of the Side Moldings:
Followed by a little flexing...
And then some sort of wiring short behind the dash that I can't remember now...
Took the Jeep down to Death Valley with some friends where they nicknamed it "The Animal".
If it's going to be called "The Animal", it's going to need a lift. Installed ~November 2010.
Rubicon Express 3.5" Super-Flex w/ Full Leaf Pack
After the lift there was quite a bit of vibration while driving, so we installed a SYE and new driveshaft. This fixed some of it, but there were still problems. Unfortunately I don't have pictures of that.
However, I do have some photos of the front fender trimming that followed.
And of course after the lift it needed some new shoes...
February 2011 - Lake Pillsbury, CA - Camping Trip
Finally got around to starting the rear fender cut and fold. Passenger side done, driver's side still in progress.
March 2012 - Lake Pillsbury Camping
The Jeep got stuck in a puddle, threw a CEL, ended up having to replace the TPS.
And then the worst April fools joke over...
Threw a rod. Oil pan is shredded and there's a hole punched in the engine block.
The ending to that story was quite sad. Haha, good luck on getting it running again! I've always liked the looks of XJs, good build so far.
This exactly the kind of thing I'm going to do with my 92 xj. Subscribed!
The story isn't over yet JColee... Coming this month:
- Used replacement motor installation by my trusted mechanic.
- New JCR front and rear bumper powder coating / installation.
Stay tuned. With a little luck she'll be back on the road soon.
Got the XJ back from my mechanic this week with a new radiator and a replacement used motor around 100k mi.
This morning, the JCR bumpers went off to the powder coater.
How much did the motor replacement cost? I always figured as soon as the one in my ZJ goes, i'll end up replacing it.
$2500 all in. Motor, radiator, some odd parts, and labor. I wasn't quite ready to make the jump to a stroker.
