hysteria's 90 yj build

disclaimer: this thread is mostly bs talk! Save yourself time and just skim for pictures!
Well after reading build threads avidly for the last year, I figured I should get mine started.

Almost a year ago (may 2010) I picked up my 1990 YJ hard top full doors for 3000. It came with 33x12.50 mud terrains with decent tread and a 4.2l 258 straight six with a weber carb.

It had minor issues when I got it. The alternator belt was worn to shreds almost which was causing the engine to barely run. The PO thought it was the battery so they replaced the battery with a new one. I am not mechanical at all but I was able to see that the belt was TOAST so I put a new one on and bam it runs great. The valve cover gasket was leaking but that was an easy fix also. The hard doors had issues opening but the linkage is pretty simple in those doors and I have been able to fix and refix those several times.

I dont have any pics of when I first got it, so I will jump into some more recent pics ( april 2011)

Here she sits nice and muddy

The heep didnt come with a winch, so that was my first mod.
(this is me winching out my buddies yj)

I also put a smittybilt rear bumper and mounted some cheapo rear lights so I could get some better backup lighting on the trails

I continued to do some minor mods, mostly fabbed myself

In cab camera mount

Dome Light

fabbed up a mount for my hi lift and shovel

I bought a full size spare on a newer jeep wheel on craiglist for 40 bones. my rear hatch doesnt open anyway, so why not mount it on that? i made a spacer bracket to mount my spare on the hatch

heres another front view pic and some pics of my buddies white yj

I took my sway bar off since and get alot more flex, so I trimmed up my flares to help with the rubbing.

So thats it for pictures now. My plans for the jeep are to keep it relatively low, it sits about 3" now with springs and shackles in the front which I am not happy with, but the PO did that.

Some friends and I get together on Sundays and work on our jeeps. My plans for this weekend are to put in my Lockright Locker that I picked up on craigslist for 120 for the d35.

I have multiple welders and have been welding for fun for about 5 years, so I plan making most of my stuff. Soon I will be getting a tubing bender and will be making tube fenders.

Anyway, thanks for looking and I welcome critisism. I will probably be building this jeep over the next few years as I am 21 and married not having a ton of extra money but enough to make slow and steady progress.

finally I started a build thread! I will try to get some more daytime pics of how it sits now. Also, here is a video I made of some footage from my in cab camera

I made the intro WAY too long so fastforward like 1 minutes in and watch it in 480p

So we went to put the lockright in the d35...

but my wheels have locking lugs and we couldnt find the key. soo..... we decided to weld up my spider gears in my D30. It went great and I will post pics tomorrow. The only problem was that after we were done we discovered that my vacuum disconnect is broken, so looks like a posi lock will be replacing that soon.

Cant decide if I want to install the lockright or help a fellow jeeper out and install it in his rig

So I got the pictures off the camera early... heres a pic of my diff when we popped it open

I was happy to find out that I had 3.55 gears not the 3.07 I thought I had. That explains how I can go 75 on the highway with 33" tires... so gear change may not be in my near future.

Anyway we cleaned it up with brake cleaner and waited for it to dry then welded up the spider gears to the carrier and the teeth in the corners. I did multipass on each side and was able to get great penetration into the side of the carrier, so I know it will be strong.

This sunday went great I think we did ok considering the time restrictions. haha. I installed a hand throttle on my 93 yj as soon as Hysteria left my house. I think it was finished like 10 minutes after he left my driveway. We need to get more people involved in the suday projects. More thoughts and hands makes everything easier. We try to have whatever tool we have used on the jeep on hand in the jeep.

Thanks for the input! I wanted to fab my own rear bumper, but I have limited Jeep time so it was more worth it to me to buy one. My smittybilt rear bumper was only like 140, and i was not worried about a spare tire carrier because I plan on doing a fold down once we fab up some corner gaurds. If you have the time I would recomend fabbing your own for sure!

Hey mudmouse, how do you like the 4" rough country lift? Does it clear your 33s or do you still have rubbing? I have been going back and forth between staying SUA or going SOA.

I found some old pictures of my 98xj.. my first jeep that got me hooked. I still see it driving around town. I will have another xj someday to add to the jeep army

theres an XJ under that mud somewhere... dont mind me on the hood. i would like to emphasize that these are OLD PICTURES dont judge me

yesss those ruts that are dug out by 35s are too big for my stock tires

I am happy to say that the pretty lady sitting shotgun here 4 years ago in this picture has now been my wife for almost 2 years (yes, i am only 21 years old, and i just realized you can barely see her in past the reflection on the windshield)

OK sorry the thread got off topic but I was excited when I found these old pictures

well its not bad i had some rubbing while flexing and if i had two people in the back seat haha but if you look in my build i trimmed my fender flares a bit as long as they stay where they are ill be happy meaning they dont sag. I just orderd a set of 1inch boom shackles but if these springs ever crap out im thinking about soa or bds 4.5
