Grim

So after having it since April 2011 I finally got to the point of posting up a build thread. Been wanting to for a while just haven't had time to update this thread with all the new mods.

In the beginning.
With doing as much as I was and saving a bunch of money my parents gave me a budget of $3,500 for a car for me. The only condition was it had to be something I could work on (engineering major after all) So I was looking at jeeps and muscle cars. I settled on a jeep and started really looking for something, not knowing anything about cars other then basics I found a few I tried to move on but those deals fell through and I came across this one.

after a long day of making fun of me about the jeep, it may have tried to kill my buddy, thus it was dubbed Grim.

with a lil 4cl

I really liked it and the guy gave me a fair deal so he delivered it one rainy afternoon and I was incredibly happy. It had its issues but I looked past everything and got it to pass inspection and then decided to pull it apart. The major issues it had were some steering problems, exhaust is shot, no radio, shocks were shot, horrific smell, and the tires were dead ect. ect... The first day I just kinda took it everywhere and my buddy started to get under my skin razzing me about it. So over the next few weeks and months I slowly built it into what it is today. The first thing I did was tear it down. Doors off, top off, carpet out, My mom gets me a lego set for my birthday and christmas every year, this year she didn't and she regretted it when the whole jeep was in pieces in her yard the first time.

and as always the first cruze with the top off

The carpet was supposed to go back in the jeep after I washed it but I could never get it clean enough.

The first purchase for the jeep was a set of 4 33in Km2s that I LOVE.

I took the jeep out to a friend of mine, and found out a lot about my jeep like the gearing (4.88) why my compressor for my air locker didn't work and so much more. He has been a great help with this build and hopefully will be providing me with a few more parts soon.

So I started to fix what was wrong on the jeep. Slowly tracking down rattles and noises and adding new parts I added a new bumper (the first of three, I'm indecisive ) in the rear which took two days and a gas tank drop. But mostly added to my wish list. I added a new stereo (with some trouble) and new speakers (with alot of trouble) and realised that some people have no idea what they are doing with electrical. The PO had left three head unit plugs spliced into the harness and a full Spool of wire behind the dash. Also had High-Tech put on some new meats. and put on some new shocks

Then when my mom said she didn't need her car for a week or so traveling for work I borrowed a Pop Tent and got some sand paper to herculine the interior. I started by getting rid of all the rust and scuffing the entire interior. Then I taped out everything and started to roll. Two days and Two coats and I had everything done. I then moved the compressor from in the tub to under the hood and cleaned up everything so that when it rained I was protected. The other thing is that when it rains even if i have the hardtop on my jeep still leaks what are you gonna do it's a yj.

went with a different color to make it pop.

total time from beginning to strip the interior out to full interior back in was about a week stripping paint and fixing all the little things included.

The next thing was to strip my grill down from the tattered destroyed thing that used to be and turn it black again. more bedliner for that but the spray on version

also added a new front bumper, (took two days thanks to the PO and his bolt choice) and cleaned it up alot.
took it down to high tech for a new steering set then got ready and took it out for the first time to the Fall Crawl.
had a blast and got some great pics of the rig as it sat.

also set my old winch on fire setting up for tech skills day so I changed out the winch for christmas.
and added some KC lights.

next step

Slip and slide... Without the slipping sliding.... or tailpipe because it fell off.

got the exhaust fixed, only to replace it again within the year.

I bought a cb setup from Auto outfitters. and had it wired through the bottom of the rig. now its more perminatly mounted and looking pretty

so this is how it sat for a bit, not long at all

and the new mods to point out are the b-e-a-utiful winch that I[s] have yet to christen[/s](story to come later on) *And yet to set on fire as well...

The newer set of KCs up top. Its really nice to use out country when there's nothing around forever.

http://s1131.photobucket.com/albums/...2-08-38_39.jpg

Just put on a new rear tire swing out from 02tj Bumper 2 of 3

With all the lights, the compressor and lockers (that need new lines) I added in a little mounting area for all my switches. Not all the switches do things yet. but you can also see the radio and Cb mounted and wired.

high lift mounted inside for the time being

And the radio needs speakers...

now my old seats were straight up destroyed. So for christmas I got some new ones. and put em in that day. It was really nice to be able to start a project and finish it on a jeep without a trip the the store.

They look great. Feel super comfortable. Sit a few inches higher then stock but You can take out the sliders and fix that. mounts straight to the factory system with a little... Persuasion...

and now my three favorite mods and why.

I shoot pool alot and used to always shoot with my family in my uncles basement. Now that We live further away It's harder to see them but always easy to catch up over a game. (plus it came with the jeep)

and my two favorite.

The bear claws were earned in one my my last years of BSA its the Kodiak and Kodiak X leadership training award. my venturing crew was the first in our state to accomplish it. It requires at least two week out backpacking trips as you learn leadership from nature. That sparked a huge interest in more then just BSA and got me into being as outdorsey as I am.

The orange headband I earned after Completing ToughMudder which is a 10mi obstacle course. thats inspired by the royal marines. That was one of the hardest things I've ever done. Well worth it and I plan to do more.

jumping forward a bit, my best friends all enjoying my rig.

since the last pictures, RC 4in lift, took off the 3in body lift and blew up my motor.

then we did a run at peters mill after i swaped my body lift for suspension lift.

and packed for the trip that killed my engine (note I was unloaded when the engine decided to start having issues. something in the lower end decided to rattle loose shortly after this trip, age and the poor care of the PO had more to do with it then I did.

So in talking to my local shops we decided that the best route was to Stroke my 2.5. So I started doing all the things to support the new motor including:

New e fan
new radiator
hood louvers
tri county gear inertia ring
and alot more

while its down I decided to go flat fender and change my bumpers as well

why flat fenders you ask? got a custom set from 426yj for less then a new pair of front fenders would have cost me.

and the bumpers are off and sold and new ones are ordered, ground pounder fab bumpers FTW!

gotta play with the rig even when it's down

easiest way to work on it

got it back just before christmas

went and wheeled it for the first time with the new mods.

end of the year run...

the first of over 100 pulls that night

using the rock lights

we went up to flag pole for a typical day of wheeling, the ice got bad and with an unexpected delay on the top of the mountain we ended up stuck in a bowl on the mountain, no way up but winch, 3 yjs and an xj, ended up adding another xj and a tj to the line up. two winches in the group, one broke. 18 hours on the mountain was an amazing night when I pushed the new mods to the limits. pulled on the winches, used the bumpers, ran the engine all night and had to power out of some bad situations. I'm 100% convinced that without the rebuild from M&D I would not have gotten off the mountain.

An honest assessment of my new engine.

I put alot of work into my engine that most people won't do to a 4cyl. I know that most people would have swapped in a 6cly or a V8 or a diesel or what have you but I didn't want to go that rout. I wanted something different that most people don't do that is unique and different. I had an upgraded alternator and a few other 4cyl specific parts that I already had money invested in and did not want to spend money twice. I did not want to put on a new T case and my Super 30 super 35 combo are in great shape. I've already got the superior 30 spline chromolly shafts in em so beefing up another part to deal with more power did not make sense to me. I wanted more power and more control so I went with a built up 4cyl and inertia ring combination. The motor has the power of a six cyl now with a lighter base. it has a lot more responsiveness and runs 80 on the highway no issues. The biggest change is the inertia ring, it holds back the jeep and needs some more spin up to get going, but once it's got some energy it just wants to crawl over everything. I'm very happy with the work M&D did and the engine set up that I'm running currently. the biggest issue i've had is that I've broken my Transmission mount so I can't wheel for a bit till I fix it soon. *it's got all the power I need and with a little more skill behind the wheel it's gonna be a formidable rig.

and then Lights! got a great deal on some LED lights, picked up a set of floods, a set of spots, and a 10in flood spot bar combo. Cree LEds and they BLOW the kc lights out of the water. gotta figure out where to mount the spots still. but everything is wired up and run to the fuse box.

the floods are now bumper mounted and make a HUGE difference on the trial. My buddy has land in WV that we wheel on that's private and miles from anything thus the lights. when you're the only set of rigs wheeling on 17 acres lights are your friend. the Snorkel was put on because the lower field floods anually and we often find ourselves needing to cross it to recover or move farm equipment to keep it from being destroyed, Yes I've used every part of my rig, no it's not a show queen

Why all the work you ask? *

this may have been the problem
