Last nice day for awhile (30 lol) So i decided it was time to yank the d35. strapped up the trans, jacked up the jeep and got shocks, ebrakes, and everything off.
Decided to not mess with ubolts, I was just going to leave the leafs on and wheel it out. Of course the spring eye to frame bolts are seized to the bushings so after an hour or so of fighting those I gave up frozen and defeated.

Next time out there I will be slipping the sawzall between the hangers and the springs and cutting them out. I would venture to say those bolts have never been out since the Jeep was made.
At least I got to release some stress by beating on them with the BFH for awhile Now its time to worry about 2 more days with highs below 0 and 40mph winds. I hate Iowa

Make sure you have a couple of blades. Those bolts are pretty hard. 30 degrees would feel pretty nice right about now, hell I would be happy to see 20.

Cabin fever setting in, so I decided to brave the cold and finish yanking that 35. 4 1/2" cutting wheel took care of those bolts no problem!
Wheeled the 35 into its final resting place in the snow. Having that out of the way I see some minor frame rust that needs attacked while its out too.

Then I decided to attack the 12pt hub bolts on the "new" d30, been blasting them for a week. came out moderatly easy. didnt think I could apply enough force with it on sawhorses to pop the hubs, but I used a trick to wedge a bolt between the C and the outer axle yoke thing and turn the wheel. since theres no wheel I turned the BFH and they both popped easily! Turning out to be a great afternoon in the frozen garage.
One thing I noticed is the axle yoke is way different on pass side than the driver side, much thicker. (the inner one) is this normal or maybe it was from a donor?
Drivers side, thinner

Pass side, beefier

Here's whats new:
Lokka came in
front seals on the way
garage heater operational! (wish I could have kept it more than a week!)
full fridge of beer
Now I just need to collect my thoughts and make a list of the nagging things I need to do, get the other half of the heep up on stands and get at it!
All my crappy jack stands are too short though, so I'm building some "risers" out of leftover 6x6 from building my porch. going to join 2 8" lengths of 6x6, and use some steel to make a solid top and screw it down so the stands don't sink in.
There is no way I am using cinder blocks or wood alone! Unless someone has a better idea :P

Oh and I removed the front flare, to get a better look at my rock carnage from last fall. sigh

Great thread, love to see the progress!

Yeah I may go that route eventually. The problem is that to get them off intact you must pull the cover, carrier, shafts, calipers, disk and then finally the cast bracket. I wont do that now, its way too cold and snowy.
Let me know if you are still looking for a set of backing plates for an 8.8, I should have an extra set in the shop. You may have to do a little "massaging" to get them back perfectly straight, but they are usable.
